What is a Generic Drug?

Your doctor will instruct you on how much Leukeran you should take depending on your medical condition, how much you weigh, and how well you respond to the medication. It is typically prescribed to be taken by mouth one time a day.

Cautions

  • Leukeran is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Suppression of the bone marrow that is severe can occur.
    • Myelocytic leukemia and secondary cancers may develop with long-term Leukeran therapy.
    • Leukeran may cause infertility and fetal abnormalities.
  • Before Leukeran treatment is initiated, the following should be discussed with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, supplements, and vitamins
    • Any existing health concerns
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Leukeran contains the following cautions:
    • History of seizures, head trauma, or epileptic-inducing medications
    • Can possibly cause cancer
    • Can can cause harm to an unborn fetus; Leukeran should not be administered to pregnant women. Effective contraceptive methods are recommended during Leukeran treatment
    • Possible infertility
    • Bone marrow suppression that is severe
    • Patients with liver failure or preexisting situations of bone marrow suppression or if white blood cell or platelet counts are abnormally low may need their dose decreased
    • If taken within 4 weeks of undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments
    • Caution should be exercised regarding cross-hypersensitivity with other medications that belong in the same drug class as Leukeran

Side Effects

Leukeran medication side effects include but are not limited to seizures, low blood cell counts, nausea, and vomiting. Contact your doctor right away if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
