What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Levsin (Hyoscyamine) is an antispasmodic medication that helps reduce muscle spasms. It works by blocking certain natural substances in the body, which helps relax the muscles in the stomach and intestines. This can lead to less movement in these areas and lower production of stomach fluids, including acid. Levsin is often used to treat various issues, such as stomach problems, irritable bowel syndrome, and bladder spasms. It belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics.

Directions

It's important to follow the Levsin dosage on the prescription label and based on your doctor's instructions. Generally, Levsin tablets are taken according to a specific schedule. For adults and teenagers 12 years and older, the usual dose is 1 to 2 tablets taken three or four times a day, about 30 minutes to an hour before meals and at bedtime. If needed, your doctor may allow you to take doses every four hours, but you should not take more than 12 tablets in one day. Swallow the tablets whole.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Levsin is Hyoscyamine.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Levsin if any of the following apply:

  • Known sensitivity or allergy to Hyoscyamine or any component of the formulation

  • Paralytic ileus (a condition where the intestines do not work properly)
  • Weakness of the intestines in elderly or frail patients
  • Unstable heart conditions

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Levsin, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Using Levsin in hot weather or while exercising may lead to overheating and heat stroke. Stay cool and hydrated while on this medication.
  • Levsin may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving, using machinery, or performing tasks that require full alertness until you know how it affects you.
  • If you have diarrhea and a history of intestinal surgery like ileostomy or colostomy, consult your doctor before using Levsin, as it may worsen certain conditions.
  • Long-term use can reduce saliva production, which may increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, or oral discomfort. Maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly.
  • Take Levsin 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals for best results.
  • Levsin can interact with several medications, including antacids, painkillers, anticholinergics, and certain antibiotics. Let your doctor know about all the medicines you’re taking to avoid interactions.
  • Use Levsin cautiously if you have heart conditions, high thyroid levels, or nerve-related issues. Always consult your doctor if you have these conditions before taking the medication.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use Levsin only if absolutely necessary, as it can pass to the baby through the placenta or breast milk. Consult your doctor.
  • Levsin is not recommended for children under 12 years old. Infants and young children may be more sensitive to its side effects, such as overheating or unusual excitement.
  • Seniors may be more prone to side effects like confusion, memory problems, dry mouth, constipation, and difficulty urinating. Discuss with your doctor if these issues arise, as a dose adjustment may be needed.
  • Memory problems can develop with long-term use, especially in older adults. If you notice changes in memory or confusion, inform your doctor.

Side Effects

Levsin may cause common side effects such as dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and urinary hesitancy or retention. Some people may also experience dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or a bloated feeling. These effects are usually mild, but if they persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects include palpitations, confusion, or allergic reactions like rash or hives. Elderly patients may be more prone to mental confusion or excitement. Rarely, Levsin may cause difficulty speaking, problems with muscle control, or severe nervousness. If you notice severe symptoms, stop taking the medication and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
