What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Litfulo (Ritlecitinib) is a medication used to treat severe hair loss caused by a condition called alopecia areata in adults and teenagers aged 12 and older. This condition can lead to significant bald patches on the scalp. Ritlecitinib works by targeting certain proteins in the body that are involved in hair loss. It specifically blocks the activity of two types of proteins, which helps to reduce hair loss. The medicine is taken as an oral capsule daily.

Directions

Litfulo is administered orally in capsule form, with a typical dosage of 50 mg once each day. It can be taken either with or without meals. Capsules should be swallowed whole, and it is important not to crush, split, or chew them. If you forget to take a dose and there are more than eight hours until your next scheduled dose, take the missed dose right away. If it’s less than eight hours until the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Litfulo is Ritlecitinib.

Contraindications

People should avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Ritlecitinib or its excipients
  • History of severe allergic reactions to similar medications

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Litfulo, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Do not use Litfulo if you have a serious or active infection. If you have a history of frequent infections or have been exposed to tuberculosis, talk to your doctor before starting this medication.
  • Get tested for tuberculosis before starting Litfulo. If you have latent TB, you’ll need to begin TB treatment before using Litfulo. Your doctor will also monitor you for any TB symptoms while you’re on this medication.
  • Litfulo can reactivate viruses like shingles. If you develop shingles or other viral infections while taking Litfulo, you may need to stop the medication and get appropriate treatment.
  • There is an increased risk of certain cancers, including skin cancer and lymphoma, when taking Litfulo. Regular skin checks and watching for any unusual symptoms are important while you’re on this medication.
  • Litfulo can increase the risk of serious heart issues like heart attacks or strokes, particularly if you are older or have existing heart conditions. Pay attention to symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath and seek medical help immediately if they occur.
  • Taking Litfulo can raise your risk of blood clots in your veins or arteries. If you experience sudden pain, swelling, or difficulty breathing, stop taking Litfulo and seek emergency medical attention right away.
  • Litfulo can lower your white blood cells and platelets, which can weaken your immune system and increase your risk of bleeding. Your doctor will regularly check your blood counts while you’re taking this medication.
  • Litfulo may cause your liver enzymes to rise, which can indicate liver stress or damage. If you feel unusually tired, nauseous, or notice yellowing of your skin or eyes, contact your doctor right away.
  • Litfulo can increase muscle enzyme levels, which might suggest muscle damage. Your doctor will monitor these levels and may adjust your dose if necessary to prevent any problems.
  • Avoid getting live vaccines while taking Litfulo. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date before starting treatment and talk to your doctor about any planned vaccines to ensure they are safe for you.

Side Effects

The most common Litfulo side effects include headache, diarrhea, acne, and skin-related issues like rash, hives, and inflamed hair follicles (folliculitis). Some people may experience fever, dizziness, and eczema. Other side effects include shingles, mouth sores, and a decrease in red blood cell counts, which may cause fatigue or weakness. These side effects are typically mild and may go away as your body adjusts to the medication.

Litfulo can lower your immune system’s ability to fight infections, leading to serious conditions like tuberculosis or shingles. You should inform your doctor if you have any infection before starting treatment. Litfulo may also increase your risk of cancer, cardiovascular issues, and blood clots. Symptoms such as chest pain, swelling in the legs, or shortness of breath require immediate medical attention. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, like swelling, trouble breathing, or hives, stop taking Litfulo and seek emergency help.
