Maxalt MLT (Rizatriptan)

Description

Maxalt-MLT (Rizatriptan) is a medicine used to treat migraine headaches. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain, which helps reduce the pain of a migraine. It belongs to a group of drugs called triptans. This medication is meant to treat a migraine that has already started, not to prevent future migraines or to manage other types of headaches. The "MLT" in Maxalt-MLT stands for "melting tablet," which means this medication dissolves quickly on your tongue, making it easier to take when you need relief fast.

Directions

When taking Maxalt-MLT, it's important to follow a doctor’s directions closely to effectively manage migraine symptoms. Take one dose as soon as you start to feel a migraine coming on. The usual amount is either 5 mg or 10 mg, depending on how well you respond to it. If the migraine doesn’t go away after two hours, you can take another dose. The maximum Maxalt-MLT dosage is 30 mg in one day.

The active ingredient in Maxalt-MLT is Rizatriptan.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

• Heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, angina, heart attacks, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
• Severe or uncontrolled hypertension
• History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
• Blood vessel issues, including ischemic bowel disease or Raynaud’s syndrome
• Certain types of migraine headaches, such as hemiplegic or basilar migraines.
• Taking certain medications, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), as well as other drugs that can increase serotonin levels in the body.
• If you’ve previously had an allergic reaction to Rizatriptan or any of the ingredients in Maxalt-MLT.

Cautions

• Before starting Maxalt-MLT, inform your healthcare provider about the following:
• Any existing health conditions
• Any allergies
• A list of all medications you are currently taking
• Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding

• People with multiple heart-related risk factors should have a heart check-up before taking Maxalt-MLT, as it can lead to serious heart problems.
• If you notice any irregular heartbeats while using Maxalt-MLT, stop taking it right away.
• Some people may feel pain, tightness, or pressure in their chest, throat, neck, or jaw. While these symptoms are usually not related to heart problems, it's important for those at high risk to get checked by a doctor.
• You should also stop using Maxalt-MLT if you experience signs of serious brain problems, like a severe headache or sudden weakness, which could indicate a stroke or bleeding in the brain.
• If you develop stomach pain or circulation problems in your hands or feet, stop taking the medication.
• Using Maxalt-MLT for a long time can lead to more headaches. You might need a plan to help reduce these headaches.
• If you notice symptoms like feeling very anxious, seeing things that aren’t there, or having a fast heartbeat, you should stop using Maxalt-MLT because these could be signs of a serious reaction called serotonin syndrome.

Side Effects

Maxalt-MLT may cause drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, or a sensation of pain or pressure in the chest or throat. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. If they persist or worsen, discuss them with a healthcare provider.

Serious side effects of Maxalt-MLT include symptoms of a heart attack, such as chest pain, discomfort spreading to the arms or back, or shortness of breath. It may also cause stroke symptoms like sudden numbness, confusion, or difficulty speaking. Other severe reactions include blood vessel problems, serotonin syndrome, or dangerously high blood pressure. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
