What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Metacam (Meloxicam) is a type of medicine used to help reduce pain and swelling in dogs, especially those with muscle or joint problems. It works by blocking certain substances in the body that cause inflammation, which leads to discomfort. Metacam can be given to dogs either by mouth or through an injection, making it easy for veterinarians to use in different situations.

Directions

Initial treatment begins with a single dose of 0.2 mg Meloxicam/kg body weight on the first day. This can be given orally or via Metacam 5 mg/ml injectable solution. Following the initial dose, daily maintenance continues with 0.1 mg Meloxicam/kg body weight administered orally at 24-hour intervals. Metacam chewable tablets are convenient, available in 1 mg and 2.5 mg strengths. These tablets correspond to the maintenance doses for dogs weighing 10 kg and 25 kg, respectively.

Ingredients

Metacam contains the active ingredient Meloxicam.

Contraindications

Avoid using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Dogs that are pregnant or lactating.
  • Animals suffering from gastrointestinal disorders like irritation or hemorrhage.
  • Dogs with impaired hepatic, cardiac, or renal function.
  • Animals with hemorrhagic disorders.
  • Dogs less than 6 weeks of age.
  • Dogs weighing less than 4 kg.
  • In cases of hypersensitivity to Meloxicam or its excipients.
  • Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolaemic, or hypotensive animals.

Cautions

  • Before administering Metacam, tell a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any medical conditions
    • Any allergies
    • All medications being taken
    • Whether the dog is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not use Metacam in animals that are dehydrated, have low blood pressure, or reduced blood volume, as it can increase the risk of kidney problems.
  • The version of Metacam for dogs is not suitable for cats. Use only the specific Metacam for cats 0.5 mg/ml oral suspension designed for cats.
  • The safety of Metacam during pregnancy and lactation has not been confirmed.
  • Metacam should not be used with other NSAIDs, steroids, or certain antibiotics, as these can cause toxic effects. Always allow a 24-hour gap if switching from other anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • If too much Metacam is given, seek immediate veterinary help for symptomatic treatment.

Side Effects

Metacam, like other NSAIDs, may cause side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and lethargy. In some cases, there may be blood in the stool, indicating gastrointestinal irritation. These side effects usually occur within the first week of treatment and often go away after discontinuing the medication.

Rare but serious side effects include gastrointestinal ulcers, bleeding, or elevated liver enzymes. Signs such as bloody vomit, dark stools, or signs of kidney problems can be life-threatening. If you notice any severe reactions, stop giving Metacam and contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.
