What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Metrogel, 1% (metronidazole) topical gel is used to treat inflammatory lesions of rosacea.

Metrogel comes in a 60 gram tube or 55 gram pump and is for use on the skin.

Directions

Metrogel should be applied as directed.

Recommended Metrogel dosage: The treated area(s) should be cleansed before applying Metrogel. Apply and rub in a thin layer of Metrogel to the affected area(s) one time a day. You may apply cosmetics after application. Do not get the medication in your mouth, eyes, or vaginal areas.

Store Metrogel between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).

Ingredients

Metronidazole is the active ingredient in Metrogel.

Betadex, edetate disodium, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methylparaben, niacinamide, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, propylparaben, and purified water are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Patients who are allergic to metronidazole or to any of the ingredients in Metrogel should not use it.

  • Before you begin using Metrogel, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you use, including lotions, creams, and ointments
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Metrogel contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Neurologic disease
    • Blood disorders; caution should be used in patients with or a history of these disorders
    • Contact dermatitis
    • Irritation of the eyes
    • Breastfeeding is not recommended while being treated with Metrogel

Metrogel side effects may include but are not limited to nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, and headache.
