What is a Generic Drug?

Description

ProAmatine (midodrine) is a medication used to treat symptomatic orthostatic hypotension.

ProAmatine (midodrine) comes in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg tablets for oral administration.

The brand product has been discontinued in the US, but generic alternatives may be available.

Directions

Take ProAmatine (midodrine) as your doctor has prescribed. The usual dose is 2.5 mg to 10 mg by mouth every 8 hours.

Contraindications

Do not take ProAmatine (midodrine) if you have severe heart disease, high blood pressure while lying down (supine blood pressure), acute kidney disease, urinary retention, pheochromocytoma, or thyrotoxicosis.

Cautions

  • ProAmatine (midodrine) contains the following boxed warning:
    • The medication may cause an increase in supine blood pressure and should only be reserved for patients whose lives are significantly affected despite standard clinical care for orthostatic hypotension.
  • Before you begin taking ProAmatine (midodrine), talk to your doctor about the following:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • ProAmatine (midodrine) contains the following cautions:
    • Potentially slow heart rate
    • Increased risk of high blood pressure when taken with other medications that can increase blood pressure, including phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, dihydroergotamine, thyroid hormones, or droxidopa
    • Avoid taking ProAmatine (midodrine) with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or linezolid
    • Your blood pressure should be monitored while sitting and lying down, as uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk of cardiovascular events like stroke
    • Do not take ProAmatine (midodrine) with medications that can cause vasoconstriction
    • If you have diabetes, vision problems, and kidney or liver impairment, exercise caution when taking ProAmatine (midodrine)
    • To reduce the risk of supine blood pressure, take ProAmatine (midodrine) no later than 6:00 PM and 3-4 hours before bedtime.

Side Effects

ProAmatine (midodrine) side effects may include but are not limited to tingling/numbness, goosebumps/hair standing on end, itching, supine blood pressure, urinary retention/urgency, chills, pain, abdominal pain, and rash.

Immediately call your doctor if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
