What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Cautions

Mya contains the following serious warnings and precautions:

  • Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels. Women who are older than 35 years of age and smoke are at increased risk; therefore, Mya should not be used by women who are older than 35 and smoke.
  • Hormone contraceptives do not prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDs. Latex or polyurethane condoms in combination with hormonal contraceptives are recommended to help protect against STIs.

  • Of all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
  • Of any allergies you may have
  • Of your past medical history and current health issues
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
  • The risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer, and liver cancer may be increased due to oral contraceptive use.
  • Blood pressure may be increased by hormonal contraceptives.
  • Glucose metabolism may be affected by birth control pills. Patients who have diabetes or a family history of diabetes should use caution with Mya.
  • Because birth control pills can cause lipid changes, other methods of birth control should be used by women who have uncontrolled lipid levels.
  • Patients who have fibroids and are taking birth control pills should be monitored closely.
  • There is an increased risk for gallbladder disease requiring surgery while taking birth control pills. After 4-5 years of taking the medication, the risk can double.
  • There is a risk of angioedema occuring, and women with hereditary angioedema are especially at risk.
  • Mya may cause corneal swelling; this can cause vision problems and tolerance changes to contact lenses.
  • Mya may cause ocular lesions; these can lead to vision loss or other vision issues.
  • Recurrent depression may be experienced while taking birth control pills, especially in patients who have a history of emotional disorders, especially depression.
  • Mya can cause fluid retention.
  • Mya may cause chloasma, or brown patches, on the face.

Side Effects

Although other side effects can occur, blood clots are a serious side effect associated with Mya. If you develop bothersome or persistent side effects, immediately talk to your doctor.
