What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Naprosyn should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Typically, the starting dose might range from 250 mg to 500 mg, taken twice a day for conditions like arthritis. Since each individual's case varies, dosing adjustments may be necessary based on the recommendations of a healthcare provider. Individuals should use the smallest effective dose of the medication for the shortest time needed to meet their treatment goals. It is important for them not to break, crush, or chew the EC-Naprosyn tablet, as this can damage its coating.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Naprosyn is Naproxen.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Naprosyn if any of the following apply:

  • Known allergy to Naproxen or other NSAIDs
  • History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients, both before and immediately after the surgery

Cautions

  • Before using Naprosyn, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Naprosyn, like other NSAIDs, may increase the risk of serious heart-related problems such as heart attack and stroke. This risk may start within the first few weeks of use and can be higher at higher doses or with long-term use. People with existing heart disease or risk factors like high blood pressure are at even greater risk.
  • Naprosyn can cause serious stomach and intestinal issues, including ulcers, bleeding, and perforation. These can happen without warning and may be fatal. The risk is higher in older adults, heavy drinkers, people taking blood thinners or steroids, and those with a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding.
  • In rare cases, Naprosyn can cause severe liver injury, including hepatitis and liver failure, which can be fatal. Symptoms of liver problems include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), fatigue, nausea, dark urine, and upper stomach pain. If you experience any of these, stop taking Naprosyn and seek medical attention.
  • Naprosyn may increase blood pressure or make existing high blood pressure worse. It can also cause fluid retention, leading to swelling in the legs, hands, or feet. If you have high blood pressure or heart failure, talk to your doctor before using this medication, and monitor your blood pressure regularly.
  • Long-term use of Naprosyn can lead to kidney damage, especially in people with preexisting kidney disease, heart failure, dehydration, or those taking certain medications like diuretics. Signs of kidney issues include swelling, fatigue, and reduced urine output. Drink plenty of fluids and seek medical help if you notice these symptoms.
  • Rare but serious skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), can occur with Naprosyn. These conditions cause painful rashes, peeling skin, and flu-like symptoms. If you develop a skin rash, stop taking Naprosyn immediately and see a doctor.
  • Naprosyn can lower red blood cell levels and increase the risk of bleeding, especially in people taking blood thinners or certain antidepressants. If you notice unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding, or symptoms of anemia (such as fatigue and pale skin), contact your doctor.
  • Naprosyn should be avoided in late pregnancy (after 30 weeks) as it can harm the baby, leading to heart and kidney problems. If NSAIDs must be used during pregnancy, they should be taken at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
  • Naprosyn reduces inflammation and fever, which can mask signs of infections. If you are on long-term treatment, regular blood tests may be needed to monitor for liver, kidney, or blood-related issues.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Naprosyn include stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, and constipation. Some patients may also experience dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, or ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Skin reactions such as itching or rash, as well as fluid retention and swelling, have also been reported. These side effects are usually mild but should be monitored if they persist or worsen.

Naprosyn may cause serious gastrointestinal issues, including bleeding, ulcers, or perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be life-threatening. It may also increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, or high blood pressure, especially with long-term use. Rare but severe reactions include liver toxicity, kidney problems, and severe skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. If you experience symptoms like black or bloody stools, chest pain, weakness on one side, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash, seek medical attention immediately.
