What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history

  • Nardil is associated with the following Boxed Warning:
    • The risk of suicidal behavior and thinking was increased by antidepressants compared to placebo in children, adolescents, and young adults according to short-term studies of major depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders. This risk must be balanced with the clinical need when anyone is considering the use of Nardil or any other antidepressant in a child, adolescent, or young adult. • Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are associated with an increased suicide risk. Appropriate and close monitoring for clinical worsening, unusual behavioral changes, and suicidality should occur in patients of all ages who start on antidepressant therapy. Families and caregivers should be instructed to closely monitor and communicate any changes with the prescriber.
    • Nardil is not approved for pediatric patients.
  • Nardil is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Worsening of depression and/or emergence of suicidal behavior and ideation or unusual behavioral changes; all patients taking antidepressants should be closely monitored for clinical worsening, suicidality, and unusual behavioral changes, especially during the first few months of therapy and during dose adjustments. Families and caregivers should be instructed to immediately report unusual behavioral changes, irritability, agitation, and other symptoms to the healthcare provider.
    • Hypertensive crises may occur.
    • Pickled herring, liver, dry sausage, broad bean pods, sauerkraut, cheese (cottage cheese and cream cheese are okay), yogurt, beer, wine, alcohol-free and reduced-alcohol beer and wine, yeast extract, meat extract, and excessive amounts of caffeine and chocolate should be avoided during treatment with Nardil and for two weeks after stopping the medication. Patients should also avoid any foods rich in protein (i.e., fish, meats, dairy products) that are spoiled or improperly refrigerated, stored, or handled, including foods that possibly underwent protein changes by pickling, fermentation, aging, or smoking.
