What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Nexavar (sorafenib) is a medication used for treating liver cancer, kidney cancer, and differentiated thyroid cancer that is uncontrolled with radioactive iodine treatment.

Nexavar is supplied in 200 mg tablets for oral administration.

Sorafenib is the generic name of Nexavar.

Directions

Nexavar should be taken as directed by your doctor. Direct any questions or concerns to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will determine an appropriate treatment regimen for you. The usual dose is to take 400 mg (2 tablets) by mouth twice daily. The medication should not be taken with food.

Ingredients

Sorafenib tosylate is the active ingredient in Nexavar. Croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, sodium lauryl sulphate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and ferric oxide red are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Nexavar should not be administered to patients with an allergy to any of its ingredients or to patients with squamous cell lung cancer who are taking carboplatin and paclitaxel.

Cautions

  • Before you start begin Nexavar therapy, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Nexavar treatment may be associated with cardiovascular events.
  • Nexavar may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Nexavar may cause high blood pressure; therefore, blood pressure monitoring should be done every week during the first 6 weeks of treatment then periodically.
  • Nexavar may cause hand-foot skin reactions, rash, and other dermatological reactions that may become life-threatening. Medical care should be requested if you develop signs or symptoms of skin reactions.
  • Nexavar may cause gastrointestinal perforation.
  • Nexavar may cause heart arrhythmias, including QT prolongation.
  • Nexavar may cause liver injury.
  • Nexavar can cause harm to an unborn fetus. Effective contraceptive methods should be used.
  • Nexavar may cause thyroid problems.

Side Effects

Common Nexavar side effects include, but are not limited to, diarrhea, fatigue, infection, hair loss, skin reactions, weight loss, appetite loss, nausea, stomach pains, high blood pressure, and bleeding. Let your doctor know as soon as possible if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
