What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Nicorette Gum 4mg is a type of medicine that helps people stop smoking by providing a controlled amount of nicotine. This can help reduce the cravings and withdrawal symptoms that often occur when someone tries to quit smoking. Since it is available over the counter, users can easily get it without needing a prescription. The gum works by allowing nicotine to be absorbed through the mouth, giving smokers a way to manage their nicotine needs without using cigarettes. This can make it easier for them to eventually quit smoking for good.

Directions

For adults, the Nicorette Gum 4mg dosage is one piece every 1 to 2 hours during the first six weeks. It’s best to use at least nine pieces each day during this time. From weeks seven to nine, you should cut back to chewing one piece every 2 to 4 hours. In the last phase, from weeks ten to twelve, reduce it even more to one piece every 4 to 8 hours.

When you chew the gum, do it slowly until you feel a tingling sensation. Then, place it between your cheek and gums so the nicotine can be absorbed. Once the tingling goes away, start chewing again until it returns. Remember not to eat or drink anything for 15 minutes before chewing the gum to help it work better. Also, make sure not to chew more than 24 pieces in one day. Keep in mind that this gum is just a temporary tool to help you stop smoking, not something you should rely on long-term.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Nicorette is Nicotine Polacrilex.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Nicorette Gum 4mg if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy: If you have a known hypersensitivity to nicotine or any component of the gum.
  • Non-smokers: Those who do not smoke should not use Nicorette Gum, as it is intended for smokers who are trying to quit.
  • Under 18 years old: The safety and effectiveness in those under 18 haven't been established.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant individuals should be cautious due to potential harm to the fetus.
  • Breastfeeding: Nicotine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
  • Dental issues: Individuals with active temporomandibular joint disease should avoid the gum as it can worsen the condition.

Cautions

  • Before using Nicorette, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using Nicorette. While this medicine is considered safer than smoking, its effects on unborn or nursing babies are not fully known. Try quitting without nicotine replacement first.
  • If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, check with your doctor before using Nicorette. Some formulations may contain sodium, which could affect your dietary needs.
  • Nicotine can increase heart rate and blood pressure. If you have heart disease, a recent heart attack, or an irregular heartbeat, consult a doctor before using Nicorette.
  • If you have high blood pressure that is not controlled with medication, talk to your doctor before using Nicorette, as nicotine can raise blood pressure.
  • If you have a stomach ulcer or diabetes, speak with your doctor before using Nicorette, as nicotine may affect these conditions.
  • If you have a history of seizures, check with your doctor before using Nicorette, as nicotine may increase the risk of seizures.
  • If you are using a non-nicotine stop-smoking aid, ask your doctor or pharmacist before combining it with Nicorette to ensure safety.
  • If you take prescription medication for depression or asthma, talk to your doctor before using Nicorette, as your medication dosage may need adjustment.
  • Stop using Nicorette and see a doctor if you experience mouth, teeth, or jaw problems, as the gum may cause irritation.
  • If you develop an irregular heartbeat or feel palpitations, stop using Nicorette and seek medical advice.
  • Signs of nicotine overdose include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, weakness, and a rapid heartbeat. If these occur, stop using Nicorette and contact a doctor.
  • If you experience oral blistering, discontinue use and talk to your doctor, as this may indicate a reaction to the medication.
  • Keep Nicorette out of reach of children and pets. Even used gum contains enough nicotine to be harmful. Wrap used gum in paper and dispose of it safely in the trash.
  • If someone swallows too much nicotine, seek medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Side Effects

When using Nicorette Gum, individuals may encounter several common side effects. These typically include a cough, irritation of the throat and mouth, headaches, increased salivation, and an upset stomach. Some people also report experiencing a taste difference or aversion to the gum. It's important that users chew the product properly to reduce potential discomfort, such as mouth sores or jaw fatigue, and follow the dosing instructions to avoid issues such as dizziness or nausea from inappropriate use.

More serious side effects, although rarer, require prompt medical attention. They can include symptoms like irregular heartbeat and severe allergic reactions indicated by swelling of the face, mouth, and throat, or hives. If these reactions occur, stop using Nicorette Gum immediately and seek medical help. Difficulty breathing and persistent nausea are other significant concerns that may warrant a doctor's visit.
