  • Products must be new. We cannot match the price of any used, short expiry or expired product.

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Noxafil uses: Noxafil is an antifungal prescribed to prevent invasive Aspergillus and Candida infections in severely immunocompromised patients.

Fungal infections in the mouth and throat (thrush) are treated with Noxafil oral suspension.

Noxafil is available in the following formulations:

  • Injection (18 mg/mL)
  • Oral tablets (100 mg)
  • Oral suspension (40 mg/mL)

Directions

Noxafil should be administered as your doctor has prescribed. The information with your prescription should be thoroughly read. If you have any questions or concerns, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

The route of administration, dosage, and duration of treatment will be decided by your doctor depending on the condition being treated.

Typically, Noxafil injection is given intravenously over 30-90 minutes.

Take Noxafil tablets with food. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablets.

Before use, shake Noxafil oral suspension well. Take each dose with a meal or within 20 minutes of a meal. For those who are unable to eat a full meal, take each dose with a liquid nutritional supplement or an acidic carbonated beverage.

If there is a dose missed, take the dose as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose; in that case, skip the missed dose and proceed with the regular dosing schedule. You should not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage:

  • Refrigerate Noxafil injection at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).
  • Store Noxafil tablets at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C).
  • Store Noxafil oral suspension at 77°F (25°C). Do not freeze.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Noxafil is posaconazole.

The injection contains the following inactive ingredients: 6.68 g Betadex Sulfobutyl Ether Sodium (SBECD), 0.003 g edetate disodium, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH to 2.6, and water for injection.

The oral tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: hypromellose acetate succinate, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, and Opadry® II Yellow (consists of the following ingredients: polyvinyl alcohol partially hydrolyzed, Macrogol/PEG 3350, titanium dioxide, talc, and iron oxide yellow)

The oral suspension contains the following inactive ingredients: polysorbate 80, simethicone, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate dihydrate, citric acid monohydrate, glycerin, xanthan gum, liquid glucose, titanium dioxide, artificial cherry flavor, and purified water.

Contraindications

Noxafil should not be administered to patients who are allergic to posaconazole or to any other azole antifungals. Also, patients who are taking sirolimus, CYP3A4 substrates (pimozide and quinidine), HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or ergot alkaloids should avoid taking Noxafil. If you do not know if you take any of these medications, you should consult your doctor.

Cautions

  • Before you begin taking Noxafil, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • Your past medical history
    • Your current health conditions
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Dose reductions may be required, as Noxafil can increase the drug levels of cyclosporine and tacrolimus in the body.
  • A heart arrhythmia called QTc prolongation can occur with Noxafil use.
  • Noxafil can cause an increase in liver enzymes.
  • Unless benefits outweigh risks, patients with kidney issues should avoid using the Noxafil injection.
  • Hypnotic or sedative effects caused by midazolam can be prolonged by Noxafil. Patients should be monitored, and benzodiazepine receptor antagonists should be available.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, side effects associated with Noxafil include diarrhea, nausea, fever, vomiting, headache, coughing, and low potassium levels in the blood. If you develop troublesome or persistent side effects, immediately talk to your healthcare provider.
