What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Nucala (mepolizumab) injection is prescribed for treating a variety of conditions, including:

  • Severe asthma and an eosinophilic phenotype in adults and pediatric patients six years of age and older
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults
  • Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis in adults
  • Hypereosinophilic syndrome with no known non-hematologic secondary cause in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older who have had the condition for at least six months

Nucala should not be used to relieve sudden shortness of breath or an asthma attack.

Nucala is available in 100 mg/mL prefilled autoinjector or prefilled syringes for single-dose use. It is also available in 40 mg/0.4 mL prefilled syringes for single-dose use.

Directions

Nucala should be used as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the medication, contact your doctor or pharmacy.

Each patient’s Nucala injection dose is individualized depending upon their age and condition being treated. Your doctor or healthcare provider will teach you how and when to use Nucala. Your doctor will also tell you how long you will be treated with Nucala.

Nucala is typically injected underneath the skin of the upper arm, thigh, or abdomen once every 4 weeks.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Nucala prefilled autoinjectors and syringes is mepolizumab.

The inactive ingredients include citric acid monohydrate, EDTA disodium dihydrate, polysorbate 80, sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, and sucrose.

Contraindications

You should avoid using Nucala if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients or excipients.

Cautions

  • Before you start using Nucala, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy status
    • Your breastfeeding status
  • Nucala can cause allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, low blood pressure, hives, rash, and difficulty breathing. If you develop any of these reactions, immediately seek emergency care.
  • Nucala can cause shingles. The shingles vaccine may be an option.
  • Systemic or inhaled corticosteroids should not be abruptly discontinued upon initial treatment with Nucala. Instead, they should be gradually tapered.
  • Any helminth infections should be treated before Nucala is started.

Side Effects

Headache, injection site reaction, back pain, fatigue, pain and throat pain, and joint pain are the most common side effects of Nucala injection. Other side effects may also occur. Therefore, if you have side effects that worry you or won’t go away, immediately tell your doctor.
