What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Odactra is a medication used to help treat allergies from house dust mites. Patients aged 12-65 are able to take this medication if prescribed.

Odactra dust allergy medicine is available as a tablet; the tablet should be placed under the tongue.

Directions

Odactra should be taken per your doctor’s instructions. You can speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

One tablet should be placed under the tongue one time a day. The tablet will dissolve within 10 seconds; however, you should avoid swallowing for at least one minute.

For your first dose, you should be supervised by a medical provider. During the 30 minutes after administration, you will be observed.

Ingredients

House dust mite allergen extract from Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is contained in Odactra.

The inactive ingredients in Odactra include gelatin NF (fish source), mannitol USP, and sodium hydroxide NF.

Contraindications

If you suffer from severe or uncontrolled asthma, you should not take Odactra.

If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to allergen immunotherapy, you should not take Odactra.

If you have ever had eosinophilic esophagitis, you should not take Odactra.

If you have an allergy to Odactra or any of its ingredients, do not take Odactra.

Cautions

Odactra has the following FDA Boxed Warnings:

  • Anaphylaxis, severe laryngopharyngeal restriction, or other life-threatening allergic reactions can occur while taking Odactra.
  • If you suffer from severe or uncontrolled asthma, you should not take Odactra.
  • Patients should be observed in the medical office for at least 30 minutes after taking their first dose of Odactra.
  • Auto-injectable epinephrine should be prescribed and patients/caregivers should be trained on its appropriate use. Patients and caregivers should be instructed to seek medical care after using epinephrine.
  • Patients who have certain medical conditions that increase their risk of death from a severe serious allergic reaction may not be able to take Odactra.
  • Odactra may need to be avoided by patients who do not respond to epinephrine or inhaled bronchodilators.
  • Before you take Odactra, tell your doctor if you:
    • Take any prescription or nonprescription medications
    • Have any allergies
    • You have any health conditions and your health history
    • Are currently pregnant
    • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Immediately seek medical attention if you experience any signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction.
  • Odactra should not be taken if you have unhealed inflammation or wounds in your mouth.

Side Effects

The following are some of the most common Odactra side effects: throat irritation or tickling, mouth itching, ear itching, swelling of the back of the mouth, swelling of the lips or tongue, tongue pain, nausea, throat swelling, stomach pain, tongue ulcers or sores, mouth ulcers or sores, and food taste difference. However, these are not the only side effects that may occur while taking this medication. If you experience persistent or concerning side effects, immediately speak with your doctor.
