Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Ongentys (opicapone) is used with levodopa/carbidopa to treat "off" episodes in patients with Parkinson's Disease.
When you receive your Ongentys prescription, be sure to follow the instructions that come with it. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.
Ongentys is supplied in oral capsules of 25 mg and 50 mg strengths.
Recommended dose: Take 50 mg by mouth one time a day at bedtime. Do not eat food for at least 1 hour before and 1 hour after taking Ongentys. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose if you have liver problems. Ongentys should be avoided if you have severe liver problems.
Opicapone, a selective and reversible catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, is the active ingredient contained in each Ongentys capsule.
Avoid taking Ongentys with non-selective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. If you are not sure whether or not you take MAO inhibitors, ask your doctor.
Avoid taking Ongentys if you have ever had pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, or other catecholamine-secreting tumors.
The most common side effects of Ongentys include constipation, low blood pressure, elevated blood creatine kinase, weight loss, and sudden and involuntary movements. These are not all the possible side effects of Ongentys. Contact your doctor right immediately if you experience side effects that concern you or persist.
