What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Opdivo (nivolumab) is medicine given via an intravenous infusion to treat certain cancers, including:

  • Melanoma
  • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
  • Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
  • Advanced Kidney Cancer
  • Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer
  • Bladder or Urinary Tract Cancer (Urothelial)
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Advanced Liver Cancer
  • Gastric Cancer, Gastroesophageal Junction Cancer, and Esophageal Cancer

Directions

Your healthcare provider will decide how much Opdivo you should receive and how often. Your healthcare provider will also check blood tests.

Opdvio will be administered by your healthcare provider via an intravenous infusion.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Opdivo is nivolumab. Mannitol, pentetic acid, polysorbate 80, sodium chloride, sodium citrate dihydrate, and Water for Injection are the inactive ingredients. Hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide may also be included.

Contraindications

According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no reasons why a person should not receive Opdivo. However, consult with your healthcare provider about an appropriate treatment regimen for you.

Cautions

  • Before you receive Opdivo, inform your healthcare provider of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • The status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Opdivo may cause problems with your immune response that can be severe or fatal.
  • Opdivo may cause infusion-related reactions.
  • Patients who receive a stem cell transplant that uses donor stem cells (allogeneic) before or after being treated with Opdivo may experience serious complications that can be fatal.
  • Harm to an unborn fetus may occur. Therefore, effective contraception is recommended.
  • Breastfeeding should be avoided during treatment with Opdivo.
  • Opdivo and a thalidomide analogue plus dexamethasone should not be administered to patients with multiple myeloma unless they are participating in a controlled clinical trial.

Side Effects

Opdivo side effects may include but are not limited to: fatigue; rash; muscle, bone, and joint pain; itchy skin; diarrhea; nausea; weakness; cough; vomiting; shortness of breath; constipation; decreased appetite; back pain; upper respiratory tract infection; fever; headache; stomach pain; and urinary tract infection. Immediately inform your healthcare provider of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
