What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Oracea (Doxycycline) is a type of medication that comes in capsule form and contains two kinds of Doxycycline beads: one that releases medicine quickly (30 mg) and another that releases it slowly (10 mg), adding up to a total of 40 mg. Although it is part of the tetracycline family of antibiotics, it is used at a lower dose that doesn't work against infections. Oracea is mainly used to help treat the bumps and pimples associated with rosacea, a skin condition. It doesn't manage facial redness caused by rosacea.

Directions

Oracea is typically taken as one capsule each morning on an empty stomach, usually at least one hour before or two hours after meals. The medication should be swallowed with a full glass of water while sitting or standing up. Do not lie down immediately after taking it, to prevent throat irritation. Avoid taking the medication right before bedtime. Follow all directions on the prescription and consult a healthcare professional with any questions.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Oracea is Doxycycline.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to Doxycycline or any tetracyclines.

Cautions

  • Before taking Oracea, inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Oracea may affect bone growth in developing fetuses and children. Pregnant women and children under 8 should avoid taking Oracea due to the risk of reduced bone growth.
  • Permanent tooth discoloration, ranging from yellow to brown, can occur if taken during tooth development, such as during pregnancy or in young children.
  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) can occur during or after antibiotic treatment. If severe diarrhea develops, contact a healthcare provider immediately for evaluation and possible treatment adjustments.
  • Patients with kidney problems may experience increased levels of certain toxins in the blood while taking Oracea. Kidney function should be monitored, and doses may need to be adjusted.
  • Oracea may increase sensitivity to sunlight, causing a heightened risk of sunburn. Patients should avoid tanning beds and excessive sunlight, wear protective clothing, and discuss sun protection with their doctor.
  • Autoimmune symptoms, such as fever, rash, joint pain, or fatigue, may develop. If these occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
  • Hyperpigmentation, or darkened patches on skin, nails, or other tissues, may occur during treatment. This can happen regardless of the duration or dosage of the drug.
  • Headaches and blurred vision caused by pseudotumor cerebri (increased pressure in the skull) have been associated with tetracyclines. Patients should report any visual disturbances promptly and may require regular eye exams during treatment.
  • Oracea may lead to drug-resistant bacteria. It should only be used for approved conditions to minimize this risk.
  • Overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms, such as fungi, may occur during treatment. Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms of infection, like vaginal discomfort, develop.
  • Periodic blood and organ function tests may be required during treatment to monitor for any potential side effects or complications.

Side Effects

Oracea side effects may include soreness in the nose and throat, sinus infections, diarrhea, and stomach bloating or pain. Some individuals report flu-like symptoms, fungal infections, or changes in certain blood tests. High blood pressure (hypertension) has also been noted as a possible side effect. These reactions are generally mild and manageable but should be discussed with your doctor if they persist or worsen.

Serious side effects of Oracea include permanent tooth discoloration in children and unborn babies, making it unsuitable for use during tooth development or pregnancy. Rare but severe effects include pseudomembranous colitis, which can cause bloody diarrhea, and immune system reactions like lupus-like syndrome or vasculitis, which may present as joint pain, rash, or fever. Oracea can also cause hyperpigmentation, leading to darkening of skin, gums, and eyes, as well as benign intracranial hypertension, a condition that may lead to vision changes or loss. Stop taking Oracea and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe headaches, blurred vision, or any of these serious symptoms.
