What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Orilissa (Elagolix) is a medication used to manage moderate to severe pain caused by endometriosis. It is a nonpeptide small molecule that works as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist. By blocking GnRH receptors, it reduces the levels of hormones like estrogen, which contributes to endometriosis pain.

Directions

The typical dosage for managing endometriosis pain varies based on the severity of symptoms.

  • Standard dosages:
    • 150 mg: Once daily.
    • 200 mg: Twice daily.

Take the medication at the same time each day, with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Never change the dose or frequency without consulting a healthcare provider. It’s important to start with the lowest effective dose tailored to individual needs to reduce potential side effects.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Orilissa is Elagolix.

Contraindications

Orilissa may not be suitable for everyone. You should avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Currently pregnant
  • Known osteoporosis
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Taking organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP) 1B1 inhibitors
  • Hypersensitivity to Elagolix or any of the ingredients

Cautions

  • Before using Orilissa, ensure you provide your healthcare provider with the following information:
    • Existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A list of all the medications you are currently taking
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Orilissa can lead to a decrease in bone density, which might not fully reverse after stopping treatment. This is more likely with longer use or higher doses. Bone density should be monitored if you have risk factors for osteoporosis.
  • Orilissa can alter menstrual bleeding, possibly changing your ability to recognize pregnancy. If you suspect you are pregnant, get a pregnancy test. Discontinue Orilissa if pregnancy is confirmed.
  • Watch for any signs of worsening depression, anxiety, or mood changes, including thoughts of suicide. It's important to seek medical attention if you experience these mental health changes.
  • Orilissa has been linked to increases in liver enzymes, which can indicate liver damage. Be vigilant for symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or pain in your abdomen's upper right side.
  • Avoid hormonal contraceptives during and for 28 days after Orilissa treatment, as it can decrease their effectiveness and heighten the risk of estrogenic side effects. Use non-hormonal forms of contraception instead.

Side Effects

Orilissa may cause several side effects. These include hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, nausea, and difficulty sleeping. Individuals might also experience menstrual irregularities, anxiety, joint pain, depression, and other mood changes.

Other concerns with Orilissa involve potential mental health changes. It may cause or worsen depression and anxiety, and in severe cases, lead to suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Immediate medical attention is necessary if you notice abrupt or serious changes in your mood or behavior. Orilissa can also affec liver function, signs of which include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea, swelling, pain in the upper right abdomen, or easy bruising. Alert your healthcare provider promptly if these symptoms develop.
