What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Orserdu (Elacestrant) is an estrogen receptor antagonist used to treat breast cancer. It targets estrogen receptors, blocking the effects of estrogen on the cells. This drug is used specifically for ER-positive, HER2-negative, and ESR1-mutated advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It is taken orally in tablet form.

Directions

Take Orserdu orally, following your healthcare provider’s instructions. The standard dosage is one tablet daily. It should be taken at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or split it. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose—then skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at one time. Always follow your healthcare provider's advice to ensure the best outcomes.

Orserdu contains the active ingredient Elacestrant.

  • Around 30% of patients experience elevated cholesterol, and 27% have increased triglyceride levels. Serious increases are uncommon. Regular monitoring of your lipid levels may be recommended before and during treatment to manage any changes effectively.
  • Orserdu has been shown to harm unborn babies in animal studies, with risks observed at doses lower than those given to humans. If you are pregnant, or there's a chance you could become pregnant, it's important to understand the potential risks to the unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for one week after the last dose. Similarly, men with female partners who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for one week following the last dose.

Side Effects

Orserdu side effects include musculoskeletal pain, nausea, and fatigue. Other common side effects include vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, headache, constipation, and stomach pain. Symptoms like hot flashes and indigestion are also reported. These side effects are generally manageable and vary in intensity among individuals.

Some patients on Orserdu may experience severe side effects requiring medical attention or changes in treatment. Notable among these are significant musculoskeletal pain and intense nausea. The medication may also lead to noticeable changes in liver enzymes, indicating potential liver issues.
