What is a Generic Drug?

Directions

Your doctor will decide on a treatment plan for you, including the Osnuvo (teriparatide) dose. You or your caregiver should be taught how to prepare, administer, and discard Osnuvo properly.

Osnuvo should be administered in the thigh or stomach area.

You should not share any needles or pens with other people.

Storage:

Keep Osnuvo pens and new cartridges refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze and do not use it if the solution is cloudy, colored, if there are solid particles present in the solution, or if the medication has expired.

Ingredients

Teriparatide is the active ingredient in Osnuvo. Acetic acid (glacial), mannitol, metacresol, hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment), sodium acetate (trihydrate), sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment), and water for injection are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Osnuvo should not be administered to patients who:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Osnuvo
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have bone cancer or cancer from other parts of the body that has spread to the bone
  • Have had external beam or implant radiation therapy involving bones
  • Have high blood calcium levels
  • Have bone diseases such as hyperparathyroidism and Paget’s disease
  • Have severe kidney issues
  • Have unexplained high alkaline phosphatase levels

In addition, Osnuvo should not be administered to children or growing adults.

Cautions

  • Before you start Osnuvo treatment, tell your doctor:
    • About all the prescription and nonprescription medications you are on
    • About your allergies
    • About your current health problems
    • About your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your doctor should evaluate your blood and urine calcium levels while you’re receiving treatment with Osnuvo. Tell your doctor right away if you develop nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, or low energy; these could be symptoms of high blood calcium levels.
  • The safety and efficacy of Osnuvo use for longer than 24 months has not been determined.
  • Talk with your doctor if you have or have had kidney or bladder stones, as you may need special monitoring.
  • Kidney function can impact dosing and effects of Osnuvo. Your doctor will discuss any monitoring that may be necessary.
  • Patients may experience a drop in blood pressure within 4 hours of using Osnuvo. Sit or lie down until you feel better if this occurs. If your symptoms get worse or they do not resolve, call your doctor. Driving or operating machinery is not recommended; wait until you are not dizzy or lightheaded.
  • It is not known whether Osnuvo passes into breast milk; therefore, women who are breastfeeding should avoid using the medication.

Side Effects

Osnuvo side effects include but are not limited to constipation, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, heartburn, high blood pressure, increased sweating, joint pain, leg cramps, nausea, pain, runny nose, sore throat, trouble sleeping, and vomiting. Contact your doctor right away if you have worrisome or persistent side effects.
