Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Oxlumo (Lumasiran) is a medication used to treat primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1), a rare genetic disorder. It works by targeting and suppressing the HAO1 gene, which reduces the activity of glycolate oxidase enzymes responsible for the excessive production of oxalate. By doing so, Oxlumo helps decrease oxalate levels in the urine and blood, which are typically elevated in individuals with PH1. Lumasiran is administered as a subcutaneous injection, meaning it is delivered under the skin, providing a viable treatment option for managing the condition and its related symptoms.
Oxlumo is designed for subcutaneous administration, which means patients should inject it under the skin. The exact dosage may vary based on body weight. For people who weigh 20 kg or 44 pounds or more, Oxlumo dosing typically starts with three loading doses of 3 mg/kg administered at monthly intervals, followed by maintenance doses of 3 mg/kg every three months.
Patients or caregivers should receive proper training to ensure they administer Oxlumo correctly, and they should always inspect the solution before use, ensuring it is clear and colorless to pale yellow without particles. It’s important to rotate injection sites to reduce the risk of site reactions, selecting a different area on the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm for each injection.
The main active ingredient in Oxlumo is Lumasiran Sodium.
There are no listed contraindications on the drug label. However, those with a known hypersensitivity to Lumasiran or any component of the formulation should avoid this medication.
The most common side effects experienced by patients using Oxlumo are related to the injection site. These reactions include redness, swelling, pain, bruising, itching, and discoloration. These symptoms are usually mild and resolve within a day without requiring discontinuation of treatment. Other less common side effects reported include various types of stomach pain.
