What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Oxsoralen-Ultra is used to treat psoriasis that has not been successfully managed by other treatment regimens and when supported by biopsy. The intention is to give the medication with a schedule of controlled long-wave ultraviolet (UV) radiation doses.

Oxsoralen-Ultra 10 mg is supplied in gelatin capsules for oral administration.

Methoxsalen is the Oxsoralen-Ultra 10 mg generic name.

Directions

Oxsoralen-Ultra should be administered as your doctor has instructed. Any questions or concerns may be directed to your doctor.

Your doctor will instruct you on your Oxsoralen-Ultra therapy. The starting dose is typically to take Oxsoralen-Ultra with low-fat food or milk between 1 and 2 hours before exposure to UVA.

Your doctor will instruct you on safety measures and procedures for before and after treatment.

Ingredients

10 mg methoxsalen is in Oxsoralen-Ultra. D&C yellow 10, FD&C blue 1, FD&C yellow 6, gelatin, glycerin, methylparaben, polyethylene glycol 400, propylparaben, purified water, sorbitol solution, and titanium dioxide are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Oxsoralen-Ultra is not recommended in patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Oxsoralen-Ultra or in patients with melanoma or a history of melanoma or invasive skin cancer. In addition, the medication is not recommended in patients who do not have an eye lens.

Oxsoralen-Ultra is not recommended in patients with photosensitivity caused by conditions such as lupus, porphyria, xeroderma pigmentosum, and albinism unless there is a special circumstance.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Oxsoralen-Ultra, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Methoxsalen with UV radiation should only be performed by competent physicians in psoriasis diagnosis and treatment who have received special training in photochemotherapy. Treatment should be done only under close supervision by the physician.
  • Oxsoralen-Ultra should not be used in place of Oxsoralen® or 8-MOP®.
  • Skin burns from UVA or sunlight may occur if you take more than the recommended dose or take the medication longer than recommended.
  • The risk of skin cancer and cataracts may be increased by Oxsoralen-Ultra.
  • UV radiation or sunlight exposure can cause “premature aging” of the skin.
  • Close monitoring should occur in patients with or who have a history of basal cell carcinoma, have received x-ray therapy or grenz ray therapy, or have received arsenic therapy.
  • Caution should be exercised in elderly patients and in patients with liver problems, cataracts, cardiovascular problems, kidney problems, or skin cancer.
  • Vertical UVA chamber treatment should not occur in patients with heart disease who may not tolerate standing for a long time or heat stress.
  • Patients who use other medications that can cause photosensitivity should exercise caution.
  • Patients are recommended to receive eye examinations before they begin treatment with Oxsoralen-Ultra then one time a year.

Side Effects

The most common side effect is nausea. This may not be only the side effect that can occur, so immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
