What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Ingredients

Chlorhexidine gluconate is the active ingredient in Peridex. Water, alcohol, glycerine, PEG-40 sorbitan di- isostearate, flavour, saccharin sodium, and FD&C Blue #1 Dye makes up its base.

Contraindications

Peridex should not be used in patients with an allergy to chlorhexidine gluconate or to any of Peridex’s other ingredients.

Cautions

  • Discuss the following with your dentist prior to using Peridex:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and supplements
    • Any mouthwashes you use
    • Any allergies you have
    • Any current current health problems you have
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Peridex is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • It is unknown whether Peridex affects periodontitis.
    • An increase in supragingival calculus was observed in Peridex users compared with control users during clinical testing; however, it is not known whether supragingival calculus is increased by Peridex. Removal of calculus deposits should occur 6 months or less via dental prophylaxis.
    • Anaphylaxis or other serious allergic reactions can occur.
    • Patients may experience staining on surfaces such as teeth, tongue, and restorations. Although dental prophylaxis may remove staining, these surfaces may become permanently discolored, especially in patients who have anterior facial restorations with rough surfaces and margins; replacements may be needed. If permanent discoloration is unacceptable, patients should avoid Peridex use.
    • Altered taste can occur.

Side Effects

Peridex side effects include but are not limited to staining of the teeth and other oral surfaces, calculus formation, and altered taste.

Call your dentist or doctor right away if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
