What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Ponstel (Mefenamic Acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the fenamate class. It treats mild to moderate pain and is often prescribed for menstrual cramps. Mefenamic acid works by blocking the production of prostaglandins, chemicals in the body that cause inflammation and pain.

Directions

Take Ponstel by mouth, usually with food or milk, to prevent stomach upset. The standard Ponstel dosage is 500 mg initially, followed by 250 mg every six hours as needed, for no more than one week. Take the medication as prescribed and do not exceed the recommended duration.

Ingredients

Ponstel capsules contain the active ingredient, Mefenamic Acid.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Ponstel if any of the following apply:

  • Hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid
  • History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic reaction after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Recent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Late-stage pregnancy due to risk of premature closure of ductus arteriosus

Cautions

  • Before initiating treatment with Ponstel, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Ponstel may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events like heart attacks or strokes, which can be fatal. This risk may increase with higher doses and longer treatment duration.
  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible to minimize cardiovascular risks. Be vigilant for symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, and seek immediate medical assistance if they occur.
  • Ponstel should not be used following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery due to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • The drug may cause severe gastrointestinal side effects including bleeding, ulcers, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur without warning.
  • Ponstel can elevate liver enzymes and cause severe liver reactions. Discontinue use if symptoms of liver problems appear.
  • The medication can worsen or cause new onset hypertension, necessitating regular monitoring of blood pressure.
  • Heart failure and fluid retention are potential risks. Avoid use if you have severe heart failure.
  • Long-term NSAID use, including Ponstel, can result in kidney damage. Monitor kidney function regularly, especially if you have compromised kidney health.
  • Ponstel can increase serum potassium, which could lead to serious heart problems.
  • Anaphylactic reactions are possible and may require immediate medical intervention.
  • Serious skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, can occur. Discontinue Ponstel at the first appearance of skin rash or any other sign of hypersensitivity.
  • DRESS syndrome, a potentially life-threatening drug reaction, can develop. Discontinue Ponstel immediately if symptoms like fever, rash, or lymphadenopathy appear.
  • Pregnant women should avoid using Ponstel, especially in the later stages of pregnancy, due to the risk of fetal harm.
  • The drug may impair female fertility. Consider this potential effect when planning for pregnancy.
  • Review all current medications with your healthcare provider to avoid harmful drug interactions, especially with aspirin and other NSAIDs, which can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Side Effects

When taking Ponstel, some common side effects you might encounter include stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, and headaches. It's also common to experience dizziness or skin rashes. Gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea or constipation can occur as well.

Ponstel may lead to severe side effects that require immediate medical attention. These include signs of gastrointestinal bleeding such as black, tarry stools or vomiting blood, and liver problems indicated by yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. Cardiovascular issues like chest pain or sudden leg swelling, severe skin reactions, or any signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing also need urgent care. If you experience any of these, stop taking Ponstel and seek emergency help right away.
