What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Precose (Acarbose) is a medication taken by mouth that helps manage Type 2 diabetes. It works by slowing down how carbohydrates are broken down in the intestines, which helps prevent a quick rise in blood sugar levels after eating. Acarbose can be used by itself or along with other diabetes medications to help keep blood sugar levels stable.

Directions

Acarbose should be taken orally with a glass of water. It’s important to take this medication at the start of a main meal. The dosage typically begins at 25 mg, taken three times a day. Depending on individual response and tolerance, your healthcare provider may adjust this gradually. Do not increase the dose without consulting a doctor. Measure blood sugar levels regularly as advised by a healthcare professional.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Precose is Acarbose.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Acarbose
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Ulcers in the colon
  • Blockage in the intestines
  • Increased risk of blockage in the intestines
  • Problems absorbing food in the digestive system.

Cautions

  • Before taking Precose, be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of medications you are currently using
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Precose does not independently cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). However, when combined with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, it may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
  • Take Precose at the start of each main meal, following a doctor’s instructions, and maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine to manage blood sugar levels effectively.
  • Inform a doctor if you experience stress, illness, surgery, or infection, as these conditions can affect blood sugar control. Temporary insulin therapy may be required in such cases.
  • Routine blood tests to monitor blood sugar control and liver function are recommended during treatment. The doctor may adjust or stop treatment if liver enzyme levels become elevated.
  • Precose is not recommended for people with severe kidney problems, as the medication may accumulate in the body and cause complications.
  • Notify a doctor about other medications that may raise blood sugar, such as certain diuretics, steroids, or oral contraceptives.
  • Pregnant women should consult a doctor before using Precose. Insulin is often preferred during pregnancy to maintain blood sugar levels safely.
  • Nursing mothers should avoid using Precose as it is unclear whether the medication passes into breast milk.
  • The safety and effectiveness of Precose in children have not been established, and its use in pediatric patients is not recommended.

Side Effects

The most common Precose side effects are digestive issues such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas. Over time, gas may lessen, and stomach discomfort usually returns to normal. Following a diabetic diet may help reduce these side effects. If symptoms persist or worsen, contact a healthcare provider to consider adjusting the dosage.

In rare cases, Precose may lead to serious side effects like liver problems, including elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis, or jaundice. Some reports have mentioned severe conditions that can cause intestinal issues, such as obstruction or perforation. Signs to watch for include rectal bleeding, mucus discharge, or severe abdominal pain. There have also been rare instances of allergic reactions, like rashes or swelling, and low blood platelets. If you experience severe digestive symptoms, unusual bleeding, or signs of liver issues (like yellowing of the skin or eyes), stop taking Precose and seek medical help immediately.
