A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Prednefrin Forte (phenylephrine hydrochloride, prednisolone acetate) is an eye drop indicated for the treatment of severe non infectious eye pain, swelling, and redness.
Your doctor may instruct you to place 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every hour for the first 24 to 48 hours of treatment.
The recommended dosage is one to two drops in the affected eye(s) two to four times a day.
Do not stop using Prednefrin Forte unless your doctor instructs you to do so.
Prednisolone acetate and phenylephrine hydrochloride are the active ingredients in Prendefrin Forte.
You should not use Prednefrin Forte if you have an acute untreated purulent infection, ocular tuberculosis, fungal eye infection, mycobacterial eye infection, or narrow angle glaucoma.
You should not use Prednefrin Forte if you are allergic to prednisolone acetate, phenylephrine hydrochloride, benzalkonium chloride, or any of the other ingredients in Prednefrin Forte. Discuss your allergies with your doctor.
Prednefrin Forte may mask, enhance, or activate an acute untreated infection due to the corticosteroid contained in Prednefrin Forte.
Secondary eye infections may occur with prolonged use of Prednefrin Forte.
Fungal infections of the cornea may occur with prolonged use of Prednefrin Forte.
If you use Prednefrin Forte with stromal Herpes simplex, your risk for a longer course or exacerbation of viral eye infections is increased. You should use caution.
Glaucoma or subcapsular cataracts may develop with prolonged use of Prednefrin Forte.
You should not use Prednefrin Forte for more than 10 days unless your doctor instructs you to do so and with regular intraocular pressure monitoring.
Perforation of the eye tissues may occur with Prednefrin Forte.
Healing time may be prolonged and blebs may form after cataract surgery with Prednefrin Forte use.
Prednefrin Forte contains sodium metabisulfite which can cause allergic reactions in those with sulfite sensitivity. Be sure to discuss any allergies with your doctor.
Contact your doctor right away if you have eye pain or changes in your vision. If you experience eye irritation and redness for more than 72 hours, stop using Prednefrin Forte and contact your doctor immediately.
Remove your contact lenses before using Prednefrin Forte eye drops and wait 15 minutes after administration before re-inserting your contacts.
Wait at least 5 minutes after administration of Prednefrin Forte before you use another eye drop product.
Let your doctor know about all medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
