What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Preparation H is a product designed to help relieve discomfort from internal hemorrhoids. It contains a vasoconstrictor called Phenylephrine, which helps shrink swollen blood vessels in the area. It can help reduce pain, itching, and inflammation related to hemorrhoids. Preparation H may also have other ingredients that help soothe and protect the skin, making it even more effective in relieving symptoms. As a suppository, it is administered directly to the area of discomfort.

Directions

When using Preparation H Suppositories to manage internal hemorrhoids, it’s important to follow some key steps. First, wash your hands before and after handling the suppository to keep everything clean. Carefully take the suppository out of its wrapper. To make it easier to insert, lie on your side, with one leg straight and the other bent toward your chest. Gently push the suppository into the rectum, pointed end first, making sure it goes in far enough to pass the muscle.

Typically, you can use one suppository up to four times a day, including in the morning, at night, and after each bowel movement. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions. After inserting the suppository, stay lying down for a few minutes to help it stay in place and work properly. If you’re unsure about how to use it or what the right dose is for you, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.
