What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Prevacid (Lansoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat conditions involving excess stomach acid. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, providing relief from symptoms and allowing healing of the affected tissues. Common uses include managing duodenal and gastric ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The medication is available in both capsule and orally disintegrating tablet forms.

Directions

Prevacid OTC is a medication taken by mouth, usually in the form of a 15 mg capsule once daily. It’s best to take it before eating, preferably in the morning. If your symptoms continue after taking it, you should talk to a healthcare provider.

Make sure to swallow a Prevacid OTC dose whole with water and don’t crush or chew the tablet. Taking it at the same time every day may help it work better. When using Prevacid OTC, you should limit your treatment to 14 days in a row unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Prevacid OTC is Lansoprazole.

Contraindications

Do not take or use Prevacid OTC if any of the following conditions apply:

  • Allergic reaction to Lansoprazole or any of its ingredients
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing, vomiting blood, or passing bloody or dark stools
  • Heartburn accompanied by dizziness, sweating, or lightheadedness
  • Chest or shoulder pain along with shortness of breath; excessive sweating; pain radiating to the arms, neck, or shoulders; or feeling faint
  • Recurrent chest pain

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Prevacid OTC, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any medical conditions you currently have
    • Any allergies
    • All medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Talk to a doctor before using if you have liver disease, had heartburn for over 3 months, frequent wheezing with heartburn, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
  • Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you're taking any prescription drugs, as acid reducers may interact with them.
  • Stop using and contact a doctor if your heartburn worsens or persists, if you need to use the product for more than 14 days, or if you require more than one course of treatment every 4 months.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical advice if you experience diarrhea, a rash, or joint pain.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare professional before use.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, immediately contact a doctor or Poison Control Center.

Side Effects

Prevacid OTC may cause common side effects such as diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and constipation. These symptoms are usually mild and often resolve as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effects persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider for guidance.

Serious side effects of Prevacid OTC, while rare, include severe skin reactions with symptoms like blistering, peeling, or bleeding, accompanied by fever, chills, or body aches. Low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels may also occur with prolonged use, leading to symptoms like dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or muscle weakness. In addition, long-term use may increase the risk of stomach growths called fundic gland polyps. If you notice serious symptoms, stop taking Prevacid OTC and seek immediate medical attention.
