What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Prezista (darunavir) is a medication prescribed to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection in adults and pediatric patients who are at least 3 years old. Prezista should be given with ritonavir and other antiretroviral medications.

Prezista is available in 75 mg, 150 mg, 600 mg, and 800 mg oral tablets and 100 mg/mL oral suspension.

Prezista dosage: Prezista should be taken as prescribed. Your doctor will determine an appropriate dosage and treatment regimen for you depending on your age and weight.

Store Prezista tablets and oral suspension at 25°C (77°F) and out of children’s reach.

Avoid refrigerating or freezing the oral suspension, and do not store it in excessive heat. Be sure to shake well before using.

Ingredients

Darunavir is the active ingredient in Prezista.

Colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose are the inactive ingredients included in the tablets. Hypromellose is also contained in the 800 mg tablet. Polyethylene glycol 3350, polyvinyl alcohol-partially hydrolyzed, talc, and titanium dioxide are contained in the 75 mg and 150 mg tablet film coating, OPADRY® White. FD&C Yellow No. 6, polyethylene glycol 3350, polyvinyl alcohol-partially hydrolyzed, talc, and titanium dioxide are contained in the 600 mg tablet film coating, OPADRY® Orange. Iron oxide red, polyethylene glycol 3350, polyvinyl alcohol-partially hydrolyzed, talc, and titanium dioxide are contained in the 800 mg tablet film coating, OPADRY® Dark Red.

Citric acid monohydrate, hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment), hydroxypropyl cellulose, masking flavor, methylparaben sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, purified water, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, strawberry cream flavor, and sucralose are the inactive ingredients included in the oral suspension.

Contraindications

Do not take Prezista/ritonavir with medications that depend on CYP3A for clearance and for which increased plasma concentrations may result in serious and/or life-threatening events.

  • Before you begin treatment with Prezista, talk to your doctor about:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Prezista is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Drug-induced liver inflammation (hepatitis) can occur.
    • Mild to severe skin reactions can occur.
    • Caution should be used in patients with a sulfonamide allergy.
    • New onset of diabetes or high blood glucose can occur.
    • Redistribution or accumulation of body fat or immune reconstitution syndrome can occur.
    • Bleeding events may be increased in patients with hemophilia.
    • Prezista is not recommended for use in pediatric patients younger than 3 years of age.

Side Effects

Side effects of Prezista may include but are not limited to diarrhea, nausea, rash, headache, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
