What is a Generic Drug?

Directions

Probenecid should be taken as your doctor has instructed. Your dosage will be determined by your doctor. Refer to the medication guide that comes with your prescription for additional instructions for use.

Adults are recommended to take 250 mg by mouth twice daily for one week, followed by 500 mg by mouth twice daily thereafter.

Keep probenecid stored between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F).

Ingredients

Probenecid is the active ingredient.

Silicon dioxide, corn starch, D&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Blue No. 2, FD&C Red No. 40, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose 101, polyethylene glycol 4000, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone K90, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium starch glycolate type A potato, talc, and titanium dioxide are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Probenecid should not be prescribed to patients who meet the following criteria:

  • A probenecid allergy
  • Younger than 2 years old
  • Have uric acid kidney stones or a blood disorder/disease
  • Acute gout attack in progress

Cautions

  • Prior to starting treatment with probenecid, the following should be discussed with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, supplements, and vitamins
    • Your allergies
    • Any existing health concerns
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Probenecid contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Gout that gets worse, even after treatment
    • Potential toxicity caused by increased levels of methotrexate
    • Allergic reactions that become severe, such as anaphylaxis
    • The benefits must be greater than the risks before prescribing probenecid to pregnant women
    • Alkalizing the urine and drinking adequate fluids may prevent blood in the urine, renal colic, uric acid stones, costovertebral pain that is associated with probenecid treatment
    • Caution should be exercised in patients who have a history of peptic ulcer
    • An adjusted dose may be required in patients with kidney issues
    • A reducing substance may appear in the urine; however, it should go away once probenecid is discontinued

Side Effects

Probenecid side effects include but are not limited to headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, acute gouty arthritis, liver necrosis, sore gums, kidney issues, uric acid stones, renal colic, costovertebral pain, changes in urinary frequency, anaphylaxis, fever, itching, hives, anemia, abnormal blood cell counts, and skin issues. Tell your doctor right away if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
