What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Proglycem, also known as Diazoxide, is a medication primarily used for managing low blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia, especially when associated with conditions like insulinoma or following surgery. It works by preventing the release of insulin from the pancreas, thereby increasing blood sugar levels. Classified as a non diuretic benzothiadiazine derivative, Proglycem is available in both capsule and suspension form and is often flavored in the suspension to improve palatability. Patients typically take this oral medication when they have specific medical conditions that lead to excessive insulin production, causing dangerously low blood sugar levels.

Directions

Proglycem is typically administered orally. It's essential to follow your doctor's instructions carefully in terms of dosage, which varies based on individual health needs and medical conditions. Patients normally take the medication consistently around the same time each day to maintain an even level in the bloodstream. It's important to continue the medication even if symptoms improve, as abrupt discontinuation can cause complications.

Ingredients

Proglycem contains Diazoxide as its active ingredient.

Contraindications

Individuals should avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Hypersensitivity to Diazoxide or related compounds, including thiazides or sulfonamide derivatives.
  • Known functional hypoglycemia, as Proglycem is not effective in treating this condition.

Cautions

  • Consult a healthcare provider about the following before using Proglycem:
    • Any allergies you may have
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Other medical conditions you have
    • All medications you are currently taking
  • Proglycem can cause your body to hold onto water, which might lead to swelling or even heart problems, especially if you already have heart conditions. Using water pills (diuretics) may help manage this side effect.
  • Even though Proglycem is used to manage low blood sugar, it can sometimes swing your sugar levels too high. This effect can be stronger if you're also taking certain blood pressure medications. It's vital to keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels.
  • Proglycem has been linked to rare but serious conditions like ketoacidosis or extremely high blood sugar levels, particularly during other illnesses. Regularly checking your urine for sugar and ketones, alongside close communication with your doctor, is key.
  • There have been instances where patients, especially infants, developed temporary cataracts related to high blood sugar levels. Animal studies also showed cataract development with Proglycem use.
  • There are reports of some children experiencing changes in their facial appearance after long-term Proglycem use.
  • Proglycem has been associated with pulmonary hypertension, a serious lung condition, in infants and newborns. It's important to monitor for any signs of breathing trouble and consult a doctor if these symptoms appear.
  • Continuously monitor for sugar and ketones in your urine, especially during times of stress, and keep in touch with your doctor for periodic blood sugar level checks to possibly adjust the medication dose.
  • Since Proglycem can affect uric acid levels, it's particularly important for individuals with gout or high uric acid to be cautious.
  • Be aware that Proglycem can interact with other medications, such as enhancing the effects of blood pressure drugs or requiring adjustments for those on blood thinners.
  • Proglycem might affect newborns with jaundice due to its potential to displace bilirubin.

Side Effects

Proglycem often causes water and salt to build up in the body, which can lead to heart issues in some individuals but usually improves with water pills (diuretics). Many people also experience rapid hair growth on the body and face, upset stomach, rapid heartbeat, and sometimes higher blood sugar levels.

Rarely, Proglycem can trigger severe health problems such as diabetic emergencies that need quick medical attention. It can also cause significant blood issues that may lead to stopping the drug. Patients might experience low blood pressure, serious liver and kidney changes, and nervous system effects like anxiety or dizziness. Eye problems and intense allergic reactions are also possible. If you encounter any severe or persistent side effects, contacting a healthcare provider immediately is key.
