What is a Generic Drug?

Contraindications

Proloprim (trimethoprim) medication should not be administered to patients with an allergy to trimethoprim or who have a diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia associated with folate deficiency.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Proloprim (trimethoprim), discuss the following with your doctor:

    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Allergic reactions with trimethoprim have been reported.
  • Interference with the production of blood cells may be caused by trimethoprim, especially with large doses and/or prolonged treatment duration. Signs of serious blood disorders may include fever, sore throat, pale skin, or purple spots on the skin.
  • Patients who are at risk for folate deficiency or have kidney or liver problems should use Proloprim (trimethoprim) with caution.
  • Proloprim (trimethoprim) can cause elevated blood potassium levels, particularly with kidney problems, when taking large doses, or when taking Proloprim (trimethoprim) with other medications that can elevate blood potassium levels.
  • Taking Proloprim (trimethoprim) long-term may lead to bacterial or fungal superinfection, which can occur more than 2 months after treatment.
  • Benzyl alcohol and derivatives may be contained in some dosage forms of trimethoprim and should be avoided in newborns.

Side Effects

Proloprim (trimethoprim) side effects may include but are not limited to rash, itching, and other skin issues; hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis; nausea/vomiting; abnormal blood cell counts; elevated blood potassium levels; low blood sodium levels; and fever.

Immediately contact your doctor if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
