What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Pro-Banthine, along with other medications, is used for the treatment of peptic ulcers.

Pro-Banthine is supplied in oral tablets of 7.5 mg and 15 mg strengths.

In the U.S., the brand name has been discontinued.

Directions

Pro-Banthine should be taken as your doctor has instructed. Let your doctor or pharmacist know about any questions or concerns you have.

Your doctor will instruct you on your Pro-Banthine regimen. The initial dose is typically Pro-Banthine 15 mg by mouth four times daily (30 minutes before each meal and at bedtime).

Patients who have mild manifestations, patients who are elderly, and patients who are of small stature may only require 7.5 mg by mouth three times daily (30 minutes before each meal).

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Pro-Banthine is propantheline bromide. Inactive ingredients include calcium carbonate, castor oil, corn starch, lactose anhydrous, light mineral oil, magnesium carbonate, magnesium stearate, saccharin sodium, sucrose, talc, titanium dioxide, and waxes. The 15 mg tablets contain the coloring agents cosmetic ochre and cosmetic red.

Do not take Pro-Banthine if you have:

    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Exposure to high environmental temperatures while being treated with Pro-Banthine may result in fever and heat stroke.
  • Diarrhea may be indicative of incomplete intestinal obstruction, especially in patients with ileostomy or colostomy. Pro-Banthine should be avoided in these cases, as it can be harmful.
  • Overdosing on Pro-Banthine can cause neuromuscular blockade, potentially causing muscular weakness and paralysis.
  • Pro-Banthine can cause a fast heart rate; therefore, patients with heart problems should use the medication with caution.
  • Pro-Banthine should be used with caution in elderly patients and patients with autonomic neuropathy, liver or kidney disease, thyroid problems, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart arrhythmias, high blood pressure, and hiatal hernias.
