Description

Pulmicort Respules (budesonide) inhalation suspension is an inhaled corticosteroid that is prescribed as maintenance and preventative asthma therapy in pediatric patients who are one to 8 years old.

Directions

Pulmicort Respules should be used as directed. The prescribing physician will determine an appropriate Pulmicort Respules dosage and treatment regimen for the patient.

Pulmicort Respules should be administered via jet nebulizer connected to an air compressor that has adequate air flow and contains a mouthpiece or appropriate face mask.

The patient or caregiver should be advised to carefully read the medication guide for further usage instructions, including storage information.

Any questions or concerns may be referred to the patient’s doctor or pharmacist.

Ingredients

Budesonide is the active ingredient in Pulmicort Respules.

Disodium edetate, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, citric acid, polysorbate 80, and Water for Injection are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Pulmicort Respules should not be administered to patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients or for the primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute asthmatic episodes that necessitate intensive measures.

Cautions

  • Before a patient begins treatment with Pulmicort Respules, the following should be discussed with their doctor:
    • All the medications they take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Their allergies
    • Their current health conditions
    • Their past medical history
    • Their status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Pulmicort Respules is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Potential localized infections, including fungal infection of the mouth and throat; patients should be instructed to rinse their mouth after use.
    • Pulmicort Respules should not be used to relieve acute bronchospasm.
    • Hypersensitivity reactions can occur.
    • Suppression of the immune system, resulting in possible worsening of infections; serious and potentially fatal chickenpox or measles courses can occur in susceptible patients.
    • When transferring patients from systemic corticosteroid therapy to Pulmicort Respules, they should be slowly tapered from systemic corticosteroids.
    • Hypercorticism and adrenal suppression can occur with high doses or regular doses in patients who are susceptible.
    • Decreased bone mineral density with long-term use
    • Growth effects on pediatric patients
    • Cataracts and glaucoma
    • Paradoxical bronchospasm
    • Eosinophilic conditions and Churg-Strauss Syndrome

Side Effects

Pulmicort Respules side effects may include but are not limited to respiratory infection, rhinitis, cough, middle ear infection, viral infection, fungal infection, gastroenteritis, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, ear infection, nosebleed, conjunctivitis, and rash.

The doctor should be immediately informed of any bothersome or persistent side effects the patient experiences while using Pulmicort Respules.
