What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Qvar Autohaler is a corticosteroid used to manage asthma in adults and pediatric patients who are at least 5 years of age.

Qvar Autohaler comes as an inhalation solution containing 100 mcg of beclometasone dipropionate per actuation.

Directions

Use Qvar Autohaler as directed. Your doctor will tell you how often you should use your Qvar Autohaler depending on your age and severity of your asthma.

Ingredients

Beclometasone dipropionate is the active ingredient in Qvar Autohaler.

Propellant HFA-134a (Norflurane) and ethanol are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Patients with an allergy to any of Qvar Autohaler’s ingredients should not use it.

Cautions

  • Before you begin using Qvar Autohaler, talk to your doctor about:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Qvar Autohaler contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Qvar Autohaler should not be used for immediate relief of asthma attacks.
    • Do not abruptly stop treatment with Qvar Autohaler.
    • Systemic side effects when used at high doses or for long periods of time: Cushing’s syndrome, Cushingoid features, adrenal suppression, growth retardation in children and adolescents, decreased bone mineral density, vision problems (cataracts, glaucoma, blurred vision), and psychological/behavioral effects (sleep disorders, psychomotor hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, aggression)
    • Growth effects, particularly in pediatric patients
    • Patients should be slowly tapered from systemic corticosteroids when transferring to Qvar Autohaler.
    • Paradoxical bronchospasm
    • Caution should be used in patients with tuberculosis.

Side Effects

Qvar Autohaler side effects may include but are not limited to fungal infections in the mouth and throat; allergic reactions; swelling of the eyes, throat, lips, and face; Cushing’s syndrome, cushingoid features; adrenal suppression; growth effects in children and adolescents; decreased bone mineral density; psychomotor hyperactivity; sleep problems; anxiety; depression; aggression; changes in behavior; vision problems; and altered taste. Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects you experience while using Qvar Autohaler.
