What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

The Qvar RediHaler is a type of inhaler medication classified as a corticosteroid. It’s approved for the maintenance treatment of asthma in individuals 4 years and older. It contains a medicine called Beclomethasone Dipropionate, which works by reducing swelling in the lungs to prevent asthma attacks and improve breathing. By using a metered-dose inhaler, the medication is directly delivered to the lungs. However, this inhaler is not meant for quick relief from sudden asthma symptoms, and patients should always keep a rescue inhaler nearby for emergencies.

Directions

The Qvar RediHaler is taken as 1 or 2 puffs twice daily, inhaling deeply to ensure the medicine reaches the lungs. Younger patients aged 4 to 11 may start with 40 or 80 mcg, while those 12 and older may use doses ranging from 40 mcg to 320 mcg, depending on their needs. It's important to track the dose counter and discard the inhaler when it shows 0 or after it expires.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Qvar Redihaler is Beclomethasone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other severe and sudden asthma attacks requiring immediate and intensive treatment
  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Beclomethasone Dipropionate or to any ingredient contained in the Qvar RediHaler

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with the Qvar Redihaler, make sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Qvar Redihaler may cause yeast infections (Candida) in the mouth and throat. Rinse your mouth with water after each use to reduce the risk. If an infection develops, antifungal treatment may be needed, and your doctor may adjust your medication.
  • Qvar Redihaler does not provide immediate relief during asthma attacks. Always keep a fast-acting inhaler (such as albuterol) on hand for emergencies. If your symptoms worsen or do not respond to your usual rescue inhaler, contact your doctor right away.
  • If you are switching from oral steroids to Qvar Redihaler, your body may take time to adjust, and you may be at risk for adrenal insufficiency. This can cause fatigue, nausea, low blood pressure, or other serious symptoms, especially during stress, illness, or surgery. Carry a medical alert card and talk to your doctor about emergency steroid use if needed.
  • Qvar Redihaler can weaken your immune response, making infections like chickenpox and measles more severe. Avoid exposure to sick individuals, and let your doctor know if you have never had these infections or if you develop symptoms of an illness.
  • Some people may experience wheezing or shortness of breath right after using Qvar Redihaler. If this happens, stop using it immediately and use a fast-acting inhaler. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
  • Some people may develop allergic reactions, including rash, swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing. If you notice these symptoms, stop using Qvar Redihaler and seek emergency medical help.
  • Long-term use of Qvar Redihaler, especially in high doses, may suppress your body's natural steroid production. This could cause fatigue, weakness, or dizziness. Your doctor will monitor you and adjust your dose if needed.
  • Qvar Redihaler may slow growth in children. Regular growth checks are recommended, and the lowest effective dose should be used to minimize this risk.
  • Long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids may decrease bone mineral density, increasing the risk of fractures. If you have osteoporosis or other bone-related conditions, your doctor may recommend monitoring and lifestyle changes to protect your bones.
  • Qvar Redihaler may increase the risk of glaucoma, cataracts, and vision problems. If you notice changes in your vision, such as blurred vision or eye pain, contact your doctor for an eye exam.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Qvar RediHaler include oral yeast infections (thrush), nasal and throat pain, and cold-like symptoms. Sinus irritation and hay fever may also occur. To reduce the risk of thrush, rinse your mouth with water after each use without swallowing.

Qvar RediHaler may also cause serious side effects, such as worsening asthma, adrenal insufficiency, or increased risk of infections. Some people experience severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, rash, or trouble breathing. Long-term use may lead to reduced bone density, slowed growth in children, or eye problems like glaucoma or cataracts. If you have trouble breathing, sudden wheezing, or signs of infection, seek medical attention immediately.
