What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Rapaflo (silodosin) is a prescription medication used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Rapaflo comes in 4 mg and 8 mg capsules for oral administration.

Directions

Rapalfo should be taken as your doctor has prescribed.

Recommended dosing: 8 mg by mouth once a day with a meal.

Patients with moderate kidney impairment: 4 mg by mouth once a day with a meal.

Ingredients

Silodosin is the active ingredient in Rapaflo.

Inactive ingredients in Rapaflo 4 mg capsules: D-mannitol, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Gelatin and titanium dioxide are contained in the size #3 hard gelatin capsules. The capsules are printed with edible ink that contains yellow iron oxide.

Inactive ingredients in the Rapaflo 8 mg capsules: D-mannitol, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Gelatin and titanium dioxide are contained in the size #1 hard gelatin capsules. The capsules are printed with edible ink that contains FD&C Blue No. 1 Aluminum Lake and yellow iron oxide.

Contraindications

Patients with severe kidney or liver impairment should not take Rapaflo.

Patients should not take Rapaflo with strong CYP450 3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, clarithromycin, itraconazole, and ritonavir. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether you take any of these medications.

Patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Rapaflo should not take it.

Cautions

  • Before you begin taking Rapaflo, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Rapaflo contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Postural low blood pressure
    • Do not take Rapaflo with other alpha-blockers
    • Patients suspected to have BPH should be examined prior to starting Rapaflo to rule out prostate cancer
    • Patients planning to have cataract surgery should inform their ophthalmologist that they are taking Rapaflo due to the potential of Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome

Side Effects

Rapaflo side effects may include but are not limited to retrograde ejaculation, dizziness, diarrhea, orthostatic hypotension, headache, nasopharyngitis, and nasal congestion.

Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects while being treated with Rapaflo.
