What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Redesca (enoxaparin sodium) is a prescription medication used for preventing:

  • Blood clots that can occur after orthopedic surgery of the hip or knee
  • Blood clots that can occur after high-risk abdominal, gynecological, or urological surgeries
  • Blood clots that can occur following colorectal surgery
  • Blood clots in high-risk patients
  • Blood clotting in extracorporeal circulation while receiving hemodialysis

Redesca is also used for treating:

  • Blood clots
  • Unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction; used in combination with aspirin
  • Acute ST-segment elevation of myocardial infarction (STEMI), which is a form of a heart attack

Redesca injection comes in single-dose, prefilled syringes that contain protective needle shields. The syringes are available in the following strengths:

  • 30 mg/0.3 mL
  • 40 mg/0.4 mL
  • 60 mg/0.6 mL
  • 80 mg/0.8 mL
  • 100 mg/mL

Redesca also comes in 300 mg/3 mL multiple-dose vials.

Directions

Redesca should be used as your doctor has prescribed. The leaflet containing appropriate use information that accompanies your prescription should be read thoroughly. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any questions or concerns you may have.

An appropriate treatment regimen for you will be determined by your doctor. You should receive instructions on the proper preparation and administration of Redesca. You should also receive training on the proper disposal of syringes, vials, and needles. Do not share or reuse needles.

It is recommended to inject Redesca underneath the skin into the fatty portion of the lower abdomen. Ensure that the injection site is at least 5 centimeters away from your belly button and out toward your sides.

Store Redesca below 25°C (77°F). Avoid freezing.

Properly discard the multiple-dose vials after 28 days from the first use.

Keep all medications out of children’s reach.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Redesca is enoxaparin.

Inactive ingredients in the prefilled syringes include:

  • water for injection

Inactive ingredients in the multiple-dose vials include:

  • benzyl alcohol, a preservative

Contraindications

Redesca should not be administered to patients who:

  • Are allergic to Redesca or to any of its ingredients
  • Are allergic to heparin or other low molecular weight heparins
  • Have had or suspect decreased platelets in the blood due to heparin within the last 100 days or have an in vitro platelet-aggregation test that is positive during enoxaparin treatment
  • Have an active or subacute bacterial infection of the heart
  • Are actively bleeding
  • Have a major blood clotting problem
  • Have a current stomach or intestinal ulcer
  • Have bleeding into the brain tissues
  • Have severe uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Have diabetes-related or bleeding-related eye problems
  • Have other conditions or diseases that increase the the risk of bleeding
  • Have had brain, spinal cord, eye, or ear injuries or operations
  • Have kidney or liver problems
  • Receive spinal or epidural anesthesia in which repeated doses of Redesca (1 mg/kg every 12 hours or 1.5 mg/kg once daily) are required

Additionally, Redesca multiple dose vials should not be used for newborns or premature babies due to the benzyl alcohol content, as it may cause “Gasping Syndrome” that can be fatal.

Cautions

  • Before you begin Redasca use, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding

Side Effects

Redesca side effects include but are not limited to bleeding, abnormal lab tests, headache, injection site pain or discoloration, bruising, stomach pain, liver issues, and allergic reactions. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience worrisome or persistent side effects.
