What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Remeron RD, or Mirtazapine Orally Disintegrating Tablets, is a type of medicine used to help treat depression. It can help reduce feelings of sadness, improve sleep, and increase interest in daily activities. Mirtazapine works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain that are important for mood and mental health. This medicine comes in the form of tablets that dissolve in your mouth, making it easier for people who have trouble swallowing regular pills to take it.

Directions

When taking Remeron RD, you should place the tablet on your tongue and let it dissolve before swallowing it with your saliva. Make sure to handle the tablet with dry hands and do not take it with water. The usual Remeron RD dosage ranges from 15 mg to 45 mg, taken once a day before bedtime. Since everyone has different needs, your doctor will decide the right dose for you. If you need to stop taking it, it's important to lower the dose gradually instead of stopping suddenly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Remeron RD is Mirtazapine.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Current or recent use of MAO inhibitors (within the last 14 days) due to the risk of serious drug interactions leading to serotonin syndrome
  • Known hypersensitivity to Mirtazapine or any of the ingredients found in the medication

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Remeron RD, make sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Antidepressants like Remeron RD may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in individuals aged 24 and younger, especially during the first few months of treatment or when adjusting the dose. Monitor for signs of worsening depression or unusual behavior changes. Inform family members or caregivers to watch for these signs and seek medical help if observed.
  • Rare cases of severe low white blood cell counts (agranulocytosis) have been reported, which may cause fever, sore throat, or infection. Discontinue use if symptoms occur and consult a doctor immediately.
  • Using Remeron RD with other serotonergic drugs (e.g., SSRIs, SNRIs, triptans, or MAOIs) can cause serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include confusion, agitation, rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, and nausea. Stop the medication and seek emergency care if these occur.
  • Pupillary dilation caused by Remeron RD may trigger an acute glaucoma attack in patients with narrow eye angles. Consult an eye specialist if you have a history of eye problems.
  • Rare cases of QT prolongation (heart rhythm issues) have been reported. Use caution if you have a history of heart problems or are taking medications that can affect heart rhythm.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical help if symptoms like rash, fever, swollen glands, or systemic complications (e.g., hepatitis or myocarditis) occur.
  • Weight gain is common with Remeron RD, reported in 7.5% of adult patients and up to 49% of pediatric patients in clinical trials. Monitor weight regularly and discuss concerns with your doctor.
  • Drowsiness affects over half of patients taking Remeron RD. Avoid activities requiring alertness, such as driving, until you know how the medication affects you. Avoid alcohol and sedatives during treatment.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of bipolar disorder, as Remeron RD may trigger manic episodes.
  • Rare cases of seizures have been reported. Use with caution if you have a seizure disorder.
  • Remeron RD may increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Discuss regular monitoring with your doctor if you have risk factors for high cholesterol.
  • Older adults or those taking diuretics may be at higher risk. Symptoms include confusion, headache, weakness, and seizures. Discontinue use if hyponatremia is confirmed.
  • Remeron RD may cause elevated liver enzymes. Use cautiously if you have liver problems, and consult your doctor for regular liver function tests.
  • Abruptly stopping Remeron RD may cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, nausea, agitation, or sensory disturbances. Gradual dose reduction is recommended.
  • Remeron RD contains phenylalanine, which can be harmful to patients with phenylketonuria. Check the combined daily intake of phenylalanine from all sources.
  • Limited human studies are available. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if clearly needed. Discuss potential risks with your doctor.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
  • Store at room temperature and away from moisture. Follow the prescribed dosage and schedule to ensure effective treatment.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Remeron RD include sleepiness, increased appetite, weight gain, and dizziness. These effects are often mild but can affect daily activities. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, speak with your healthcare provider for guidance.

Remeron RD can cause serious side effects such as low white blood cell counts, serotonin syndrome, and severe skin reactions. Symptoms like fever, chills, confusion, hallucinations, or a rash with swollen glands should be reported to your healthcare provider immediately. Additionally, abruptly stopping the medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms like nausea, mood changes, or electric shock sensations, so doses should be gradually lowered under medical supervision.
