What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Rituxan (rituximab) is a medication prescribed for treating a variety of conditions such as:

  • Pemphigus vulgaris

Directions

Your treatment regimen will be tailored by your healthcare provider, taking into consideration your age, weight, medical history, and the reason for which you require Rituxan.

Rituxan will be given by your healthcare provider; it will be delivered into your body through an IV line.

Inform your healthcare provider of any questions or concerns you may have.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Rituxan is rituximab. Polysorbate 80, sodium chloride, sodium citrate dihydrate, and water for injection, USP are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

The most recent Prescribing Information does not list any contraindications to Rituxan. However, patients should consult their healthcare provider about a treatment regimen that’s best for them.

Cautions

  • Rituxan is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Infusion-related reactions that can be fatal within 24 hours of Rituxan administration. Patients require monitoring, and Rituxan should be stopped if severe reactions occur.
    • Mucocutaneous reactions that can be severe or fatal may occur.
    • Reactivation of hepatitis B may occur, which can lead to fulminant hepatitis, liver failure, and death.
    • Potentially fatal progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.
  • Before you start receiving Rituxan, inform your healthcare provider of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Rituxan infusion may cause the following:
    • Tumor lysis syndrome
    • Infections
    • Heart events that may be serious or life threatening
    • Kidney issues
    • Bowel obstruction and perforation
  • Live vaccines are not recommended before or during Rituxan therapy.
  • Harm to an unborn fetus can be caused by Rituxan. Effective contraception is recommended.

Side Effects

Rituxan side effects include but are not limited to fever, infusion-related reactions, abnormal white blood cell counts, chills, infection, weakness, redness and swelling inside the mouth, sepsis, infections, diarrhea, nausea, and headache. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you develop side effects that become bothersome or persistent.
