What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Rulid, which is also known as Roxithromycin, is a type of antibiotic used to treat different bacterial infections. It works by stopping bacteria from making proteins they need to grow and multiply. Doctors often prescribe Rulid for infections in the lungs, urinary system, and skin. The medicine usually comes in tablet form and is similar to another antibiotic called erythromycin. It's important to remember that Rulid does not work against viral infections, like the flu.

Directions

The standard adult dosage involves taking either one 300 mg tablet once daily or one 150 mg tablet twice a day. Treatment generally lasts between five and ten days, continuing for at least two days after symptoms resolve. Patients should take Rulid on an empty stomach for optimal absorption.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Rulid is Roxithromycin.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to macrolides, such as erythromycin or other similar drugs
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Concurrent use of ergot derivatives for migraine treatment

Cautions

  • Before taking Rulid, make sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Prolonged or repeated use of Rulid may lead to infections caused by resistant organisms. If such an infection occurs, treatment with Rulid should be stopped, and a suitable alternative therapy should be started.
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea or severe colitis, caused by Clostridium difficile, may occur even weeks after stopping the medication. Symptoms such as persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever should be reported immediately.
  • Avoid using drugs that slow bowel movements, like certain anti-diarrheal medications, as these may worsen symptoms of antibiotic-associated colitis.
  • Rulid may aggravate conditions such as myasthenia gravis. Patients with this condition should use it cautiously and inform their healthcare provider of any worsening symptoms.
  • Combining Rulid with ergot alkaloids (used for migraines) may cause severe blood vessel constriction, leading to possible tissue damage. Inform a doctor if you are using these medications.
  • Rulid may prolong the QT interval in the heart, which can lead to serious or life-threatening arrhythmias. Patients with a history of heart rhythm problems, electrolyte imbalances, or those taking medications that affect the QT interval should discuss risks with their doctor before using Rulid.
  • For people with severe liver conditions, Rulid may need a dose adjustment.
  • Rulid is not recommended for long-term use in children due to potential effects on bone growth. The approved pediatric dose should be followed strictly, and parents should monitor for side effects like neutropenia (low white blood cell count).
  • Rulid may interact with several medications, including digoxin, warfarin, and certain heart and sedative drugs. Inform a healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use Rulid only if clearly needed, as its safety in these situations has not been fully established.

Side Effects

The Rulid antibiotic is generally well tolerated. Common issues include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (rarely with blood), stomach pain, gas, and loss of appetite, especially with the 300 mg once-daily dose. Mild liver enzyme increases, and occasional dizziness or headaches may also occur.

Serious side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions like rashes and swelling, as well as severe conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Liver problems, irregular heartbeat, and severe abdominal pain (which may indicate pancreatitis) require immediate medical attention. If you experience difficulty breathing or jaundice, stop taking Rulid and seek urgent care.
