Sectral (Acebutolol)

Description

Sectral (acebutolol) is a medication prescribed to treat high blood pressure and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Sectral is classified as a beta-blocker, which inhibits the action of certain substances on the blood vessels and heart, leading to decreased blood pressure, heart rate, and heart strain.

Sectral is available in 200 mg capsules for oral administration.

Directions

Sectral should be taken as prescribed to help ensure you receive an appropriate Sectral dosage. The medication is usually taken by mouth once or twice daily, with or without food. Take Sectral at the same time(s) every day.

• Sectral is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
• The medication should not be stopped without first talking to your doctor. Stopping the medication abruptly can worsen some conditions. It is recommended that patients temporarily limit physical activity while gradually stopping the medication to help decrease heart strain.
• Dizziness can occur with the use of Sectral. Marijuana or alcohol can make dizziness worse. Limit alcohol consumption. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or participating in other potentially hazardous activities until you know the medication affects you.
• Before undergoing surgery or other procedures, tell your doctor or dentist about all the medications you take, including Sectral.
• The rapid or pounding heartbeat you feel when your blood glucose levels are too low may be prevented with Sectral use. Patients with diabetes or patients who are fasting, vomiting, or not regularly eating are at higher risk. Patients with diabetes should check their blood glucose regularly as directed by their doctor, as Sectral may make it more difficult to control blood glucose levels. Children may have a higher risk of low blood glucose while taking Sectral, especially if they are vomiting or not regularly eating.

Side Effects

Sectral side effects may include but are not limited to tiredness, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, upset stomach, slow heartbeat, or sleep problems.
