What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Once you are prescribed and buy Selzentry, then Selzentry should be taken by mouth twice a day with or without food. Selzentry must be taken with other antiretroviral medications.

The dose for pediatrics who weigh at least 2 kilograms should be based on body weight in kilograms and concomitant medications. The dose should not be more than the recommended adult dose.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Selzentry tablets is Maraviroc.

Each mL of Selzentry oral solution contains 20 mg of Maraviroc.

Contraindications

Selzentry should not be taken in patients with severe kidney damage or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are also taking potent CYP3A inhibitors or inducers.

Cautions

WARNING: HEPATOTOXICITY

See full prescribing information for complete boxed warnings.

  • Hepatotoxicity has been reported which may be preceded by severe rash or other features of a systemic allergic reaction (e.g., fever, eosinophilia, or elevated IgE).
  • Immediately evaluate patients with signs or symptoms of hepatitis or allergic reaction.
  • Tell your doctor about any allergies you may have. Selzentry may contain ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction in those who are allergic.
  • Selzentry may interact with certain medications. Before starting Selzentry, talk to your doctor about any medications you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • Life-threatening events, including liver damage with a severe rash or allergic reaction, have been reported. Before starting Selzentry, hepatic lab values, including ALT, AST and bilirubin, should be obtained. Monitoring of hepatic labs and discontinuation of Selzentry may be considered if you develop a rash or symptoms of hepatitis or an allergic reaction.
  • You should immediately stop taking Selzentry and monitor closely, including the monitoring of liver aminotransferases, if you develop a severe skin or hypersensitivity reaction. These may be severe and potentially life-threatening.
  • Certain cardiovascular events have been observed. Additional monitoring may be needed if you have cardiovascular problems or you are at risk for cardiovascular events.
  • If you have severe kidney damage or ESRD while taking Selzentry and you have sudden drops in blood pressure upon standing from sitting or lying down, the dose should be reduced from 300 mg twice a day to 150 mg twice a day.
  • Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. There is not enough data to determine whether or not Selzentry can harm your baby. There is a pregnancy registry that monitors the health and outcomes of the mother and baby while taking Selzentry during pregnancy.
  • Let your doctor know if you breastfeed or plan to breastfeed. You should not breastfeed if you take Selzentry. Do not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 because it can be transmitted to your baby through breastmilk.
