What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Ingredients

Salmeterol xinafoate is the active ingredient in Serevent Diskus.

Lactose monohydrate (contains milk proteins) is the inactive ingredient included.

Contraindications

Do not use Serevent Diskus without an ICS.

Do not use Serevent Diskus for the primary treatment of status asthmaticus or to treat acute episodes of asthma or COPD that necessitates intensive measures.

Do not use Serevent Diskus if you have a severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins or if you have demonstrated hypersensitivity to salmeterol or any of the excipients included in the medication.

Cautions

  • Before you begin using Serevent Diskus, tell your doctor about:
    • All the medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Serevent Diskus is associated with the following Boxed Warning:
    • The risk of asthma-related death is increased when using long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists (LABA), like salmeterol, as monotherapy (without ICS). Data from large clinical trials did not show a significant increase in the risk of serious asthma-related events when LABA is used in fixed-dose combination with ICS as compared to using ICS alone.
    • Serevent Diskus should only be prescribed as additional therapy for asthma patients who are currently taking but not adequately controlled on an ICS. Serevent Diskus should not be used for patients whose asthma is controlled adequately on low- or medium-dose ICS.
    • An increased risk of asthma-related hospitalization in pediatric and adolescent patients with LABA as monotherapy is suggested from available data from controlled clinical trials.
  • Serevent Diskus is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Serevent Diskus should not be started in acutely deteriorating asthma or COPD, and it should not be used to treat acute symptoms.
    • Serevent Diskus is not a substitute for corticosteroids; therefore, asthma patients must use an ICS with Serevent Diskus.
    • Serevent Diskus should not be used with a LABA due to the risk of overdose.
    • Stop using Serevent Diskus if paradoxical bronchospasm occurs; an alternative therapy should be started.
    • Caution should be exercised in patients with disorders of the cardiovascular or central nervous systems, diabetes, convulsive disorders, thyrotoxicosis, and ketoacidosis.
    • Watch for low blood potassium levels and high blood glucose levels.

Side Effects

Serevent Diskus side effects in asthma patients may include but are not limited to headache, influenza, nasal or sinus congestion, pharyngitis, rhinitis, tracheitis, or bronchitis.

Serevent Diskus side effects in COPD patients may include but are not limited to cough, headache, musculoskeletal pain, irritation of the throat, or viral respiratory infection.

Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects you experience while being treated with Serevent Diskus.
