What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Sibelium (Flunarizine) is a type of medication known as a calcium channel blocker. It works by stopping too much calcium from entering cells, which helps to relax blood vessels. This medicine is used to prevent migraines, especially for people who have frequent and severe headaches and haven't found relief with other treatments. It comes as an oral tablet.

Directions

The usual dosage of Sibelium is 10 mg in the evening for adults aged 18 to 65 years old. For adults 65 and older, the recommended dosage is 5 mg in the evening. Tablets and capsules should be swallowed with water. It is important to take Sibelium exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional, as it may take several weeks to see its effects. Do not adjust the dosage without consulting them first, as they will provide guidance on how long you should continue the medication. If you are on Sibelium for more than six months, your healthcare provider will monitor you closely for any potential side effects.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Sibelium is Flunarizine.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Sibelium if you have a history of the following:

  • Depression
  • Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders
  • A known allergy to Flunarizine or any ingredients in Sibelium

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Sibelium, tell your healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Sibelium may cause fatigue, which in rare cases can worsen over time. If you feel increasingly tired, contact your doctor and stop the medication. Drowsiness and sedation are also possible, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Sibelium affects you.
  • Some women may experience milk production (galactorrhea) or mild increases in certain hormone levels during the first two months of treatment. These effects usually resolve after stopping the medication. Sibelium contains lactose, so it should not be used by individuals with lactose intolerance or related conditions.
  • Since Sibelium is processed by the liver, it should be used with caution in people with liver problems. Regular checkups are recommended to monitor for any problems.
  • Sibelium is not suitable for people with Parkinson’s disease or similar conditions, as it may cause movement problems (extrapyramidal symptoms). Older patients are particularly at risk. If you notice movement difficulties, contact a doctor immediately. These symptoms usually improve after stopping the medication.
  • Sibelium is not recommended for people with depression, as it may worsen depressive symptoms, especially in younger patients. Watch for mood changes and consult a doctor if you notice signs of depression.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Sibelium include drowsiness, fatigue, and weight gain. Other frequently reported reactions are dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea. Muscle aches, insomnia, and gastrointestinal discomfort such as heartburn or stomach pain have also been noted. These side effects are typically mild and may improve with continued use.

Sibelium may cause more serious side effects, such as depression or extrapyramidal symptoms like tremors or muscle stiffness, especially in older adults. Rarely, severe mood changes or significant motor symptoms have been reported. If you experience severe mood changes, unusual movement issues, or persistent discomfort, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
