What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Simponi (Golimumab) is a monoclonal antibody that works by blocking a substance in the body called tumor necrosis factor (TNF). It falls under the category of TNF inhibitors, which are a type of disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD). Physicians prescribe Simponi to help manage the symptoms of autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, which may include reducing joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. The medication typically comes in the form of an injection that patients can administer themselves under the skin.

Directions

Simponi can be injected via an autoinjector or a prefilled syringe. The usual dosage for treating conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis is 50 mg once a month. It's important to use the proper injection techniques and follow a healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the timing and dosing schedule. When administering a Simponi injection, rotate the injection sites—such as the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm—to reduce the likelihood of reactions at the site of the injection. Patients should also be mindful not to inject into areas where the skin is tender, bruised, red, or hard.

Ingredients

Simponi contains the active ingredient Golimumab.

Contraindications

No contraindications are listed on the FDA label. However, individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Golimumab or any of its components should avoid taking or using this medication.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Simponi, inform your healthcare provider about:
    • Any allergies you may have
    • Other medications you’re taking
    • Other medical conditions you have
    • Whether you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Simponi can increase your risk of serious infections. You should not start Simponi if you have an active infection. If you develop an infection while on Simponi, it needs to be monitored closely, and you may need to stop taking Simponi if the infection becomes serious.
  • Patients taking Simponi face a risk of developing invasive fungal infections, especially if they live in or travel to regions where fungal infections are common. If you show signs of systemic illness, your doctor may recommend starting antifungal therapy.
  • For those who are carriers of the Hepatitis B virus, there's a risk that the virus could reactivate while on Simponi. It's important to monitor for this, and if reactivation occurs, you may need to stop Simponi and start antiviral therapy.
  • The use of TNF blockers, including Simponi, has been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, such as lymphoma, compared to the general population.
  • If you have a history of heart failure, be aware that Simponi can cause it to worsen or develop new heart failure. If you experience new or worsening heart symptoms, stop taking Simponi.
  • There is a potential for demyelinating disorders to appear or worsen with Simponi. If you notice neurological symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.
  • Some patients may develop symptoms similar to lupus while on Simponi. If this happens, the treatment should be discontinued.
  • Be aware that serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur with Simponi. Immediate medical attention is needed if you experience a severe allergic reaction.

Side Effects

As with other medications, Simponi is associated with side effects. The most common Simponi side effects may include upper respiratory infections, reactions at the injection site, and viral infections like flu and oral cold sores.

Significant risks of Simponi include serious infections (including TB), hepatitis B reactivation, heart failure, nervous system problems, symptoms similar to lupus, liver issues, low blood counts, and severe allergic reactions. Watch for symptoms like fever, persistent fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, chest pain, and severe rashes. Prompt medical attention is necessary for serious side effects, and ongoing monitoring by a healthcare provider is recommended.
