What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Skelaxin (Metaxalone) is a skeletal muscle relaxant used to relieve discomfort from acute musculoskeletal conditions. It acts by blocking nerve impulses that send pain signals to the brain. This medication is typically used alongside rest and physical therapy. Metaxalone is available in tablet form.

Directions

The recommended Skelaxin dosage for adults and adolescents aged 13 and older is 800 mg taken three to four times daily, with or without food. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water, without crushing or chewing them. If you notice side effects after taking this medication following a high-fat meal, consider taking it on an empty stomach or after a lighter meal instead.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Skelaxin is Metaxalone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to any ingredients of Skelaxin
  • Avoid this medication if you have a history of anemia caused by drugs or other types of anemia
  • Severe kidney or liver problems

Cautions

  • Before using Skelaxin, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any known allergies
    • A list of all medications you're currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Skelaxin may cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome, especially when taken with certain medications or at higher than recommended doses. Symptoms may include agitation, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, fever, muscle stiffness, nausea, or diarrhea. If these symptoms occur, treatment should be stopped, and a doctor should be contacted immediately.
  • If prescribed with other medications that affect serotonin, close monitoring may be needed, particularly during the start of treatment or dosage changes.
  • Skelaxin can cause drowsiness or reduced alertness, which may affect the ability to drive or operate machinery safely. These activities should be avoided until its effects are known.
  • Combining Skelaxin with alcohol or other sedative medications, such as opioids or sleeping aids, may increase drowsiness or cause difficulty breathing. Consult a doctor about all medications being taken.
  • Watch for signs of sedation or respiratory depression, particularly when Skelaxin is started or its dosage is increased.

Side Effects

Skelaxin may cause mild side effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and feelings of nervousness or irritability. Some people also experience nausea, vomiting, or general stomach discomfort. These reactions are usually temporary and resolve as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become bothersome, consult a healthcare provider.

Though rare, serious side effects of Skelaxin include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling, and more severe reactions like anaphylaxis. Other serious effects may involve jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), changes in blood cell levels (leukopenia or hemolytic anemia), or serotonin syndrome, particularly when used with other serotonergic drugs. If you notice unusual symptoms like confusion, fever, severe muscle stiffness, or rapid heart rate, stop using Skelaxin and seek immediate medical attention.
