What is a Generic Drug?

Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) should be used only on your skin as directed. Your doctor will tell you how much gel you should apply and how often.

A prescribed amount of gel should be applied onto the affected skin area(s) at around the same time(s) each day. Avoid applying to open wounds, infections, burns, or red, peeling, scaly skin. Do not get the gel in your eyes, mouth, or nose. Do not swallow the gel.

The gel may leave a cooling sensation on your skin. Thoroughly wash your hands after application unless your hands are being treated.

Keep Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) at room temperature and out of reach of children. Protect it from light, moisture, heat, and freezing.

If the medication has expired, ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of it.

Ingredients

Diclofenac sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is the active ingredient in Solaraze Gel.

Sodium hyaluronate, benzyl alcohol, macrogol monomethyl ether 350, and purified water are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) should not be used in patients with an allergy to diclofenac sodium or to any of the other ingredients in the medication, if they have ever had an allergic reaction after taking acetylsalicylic acid or any other NSAID, or if they are in their last 3 months of their pregnancy.

Cautions

  • Before you start using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium), discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the medications you use, including prescription and nonprescription medications, topical medications, lotions, sprays, or ointments
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your family medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) is associated with the following important warning:
    • The risk for a stroke or heart attack may be higher in patients who use NSAIDs (other than aspirin) like Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) compared to people who do not use these types of medications. These events may occur without warning and can be fatal. People who use NSAIDs long-term may be at greater risk. NSAIDs, including Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium), should not be used by people who have recently had a heart attack unless their doctor tells them otherwise. If you develop chest pain, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or weakness in one side or part of your body, seek medical attention immediately.
    • Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) should not be used in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
    • Stomach or intestinal bleeding, ulcers, holes, or swelling can occur with NSAID use, including Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium). These potentially fatal events may occur at any time throughout treatment and possibly without warning signs. People who use NSAIDs long-term, are older in age, have poor health, drink alcohol, or smoke while using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) may be at greater risk. If you experience stomach pain; heartburn; have bloody, black, or tarry stools; or are vomiting a substance that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds, stop using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) and contact your doctor immediately.
    • Keep all your doctor appointments and scheduled lab tests so that your doctor can monitor your progress, response to the medication, and any symptoms you may experience.
    • Carefully read the patient information sheet (Medication Guide) that comes with your prescription and reach out to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Systemic side effects are possible if Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) is applied on large areas of the skin for long periods of time.
    • Sun exposure and exposure to artificial sunlight should be avoided when using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium). Protective clothing and sunglasses should be worn in these environments.
    • Harm to an unborn baby and delivery problems can occur if using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) at about 20 weeks or later in pregnancy; do not use Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) if you are about 20 weeks pregnant or later unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
    • Stop using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) and contact your doctor right away if you develop a wide-spread skin rash.
    • Permeable (non-occlusive) bandages may be used after applying Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium); however, do not use airtight occlusive dressings.
    • Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) contains benzyl alcohol, which may cause allergic reactions and mild local irritation in some people.

Side Effects

Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium) side effects may include but are not limited to skin rash, redness, itching, irritation, swelling, peeling, or dryness at the application site; burning, pain, numbness, or tingling of the treated area of the skin; pain in the joint, back, or muscle; headache; conjunctivitis; allergy; painful sensation when the skin is touched; pins and needles sensation; muscle stiffness; dermatitis; eczema; skin sagging; and skin ulcer.

Immediately notify your doctor about any bothersome or persistent side effects you develop while using Solaraze Gel (diclofenac sodium).
