What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Somavert (pegvisomant) injection is used for treating patients who have acromegaly and did not have an adequate response to surgery or radiation therapy, or other therapies were inappropriate. The goal of Somavert treatment is to help insulin-like growth factor-1 levels in the blood reach normal levels.

Somavert comes in single-dose vials that contain 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 25 mg, or 30 mg lyophilized powder for reconstitution.

Directions

Your treatment plan will be decided by your healthcare provider. Your or a caregiver should receive instructions on how to properly store, prepare, administer, and dispose of Somavert. Somavert should be administered subcutaneously (underneath the skin) in the upper arm, thigh, abdomen, or buttocks; be sure to rotate the injection site with each administration.

Before reconstitution, Somavert should be refrigerated between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F); avoid freezing. Store out of children’s reach.

Do not reuse or share needles and syringes with other people.

Ingredients

Pegvisomant, including polyethylene glycol, is the active ingredient in Somavert.

Glycine, mannitol, sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate, and sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications to Somavert.

Cautions

  • Before you begin receiving Somavert injection, the following should be discussed with your healthcare provider:

    • Your allergies

    • Your past medical history
    • The status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • The following may occur during Somvavert treatment:
    • Low blood sugar levels

    • Improved fertility, which may result in pregnancy that’s unintentional

Side Effects
